Melinda was very young when her parents died and even though
she didn’t understand how, she knew in her heart that
her grandfather was responsible. After the death of her parents,
Melinda’s grand paw, Zachary Lawson, takes her in and
raises her; and her life would never be the same again. What
she discovers in her grandfather’s basement is every
child’s nightmare come to life.
Zachary Lawson is an evil man with a black heart and kills
for his own pleasure. Was he responsible for the death of
Melinda’s parents? His own son? What evil does he practice
in the dead of night? What are Zachary’s planes for
his granddaughter?
There is a find line between love and hate, where does one
begin and the other end? Can someone who is truly evil change
and find a heart where none existed before? This story is
one aspect of human nature that exists in the shadows, on
the edge of what should and shouldn’t be. The Kept is
a horror story truly worthy of its genre. If you like, the
writing of Edger Allen Poe, then this dark and forbidden tale
is just what you’re looking for. A true horror masterpiece.

Melinda has had a difficult life following her parents' death.
Forced to live with the grandfather she is terrified of, Melinda
lives as a slave to her bible-thumping, snake-worshipping,
racist Papaw. When Melinda is awakened by strange chanting
emanating from the basement, she discovers that her Papaw
has summoned a spirit and is keeping her prisoner to do his
bidding. When her Papaw begins to make some stunning physical
and emotional changes, Melinda is unprepared for the turn
that her life takes.
Reading The Kept was quite an experience. It is not a romance
story but a horrific tale of a young girl and her Papaw who
practices evil magics. I was enthralled by The Kept from beginning
to suspenseful, satisfying end.
Desiree Erotique's The Kept is a tense and gripping horror
story. I was especially impressed by the author's ability
to put the reader alongside the characters so that we experience
the events of the story along with the protagonist. The Kept
literally gave me chills and I continued reading it because
it was so unnerving in parts. I will reiterate the author’s
warning that The Kept contains some disturbing subject matter.
If you are strong of mind and heart, I think you will find
this is a quality short story that gives genuine chills. Bravo
Ms. Erotique!
