WRITER’S GUIDELINES -- QUILT MAGAZINE

Manuscripts: We are looking for informative or instructional articles
about quilts, quilters, quilting groups or quilting techniques, 500 to
1,000 words. Manuscripts must be sent by email or on CD with hard copy
accompanying. We use MAC computers/Microsoft Word. We can translate
many Windows and MAC programs. We do not accept articles about quilt
shops.

Title Page:  A title page covering the manuscript with title of article
and a subtitle, your name, address, phone number and social security
number and word count of article.

Pictures or illustrations are REQUIRED with each submission.  We prefer
a 300 jpg or chrome for publication..  All pictures and illustrations
MUST be identified with quilt name and owner’s name and address.  A
SEPARATE page with captions for each picture or illustration must be
attached to your manuscript.

If your quilt is desired for a color feature it will be necessary to
send your quilt to us for professional photography.

Illustrations: Preferred program is Adobe Illustrator. If unavailable,
send hard copies of computer generated art or hand drawn in black ink
(fine line marking pen rather than ball point) on white paper.

Additional Information: These MUST be included when applicable:
1. The full name of any persons mentioned in your article must be
included at least once. (Example: do not say “my aunt” without her full
name. Jane Smith, not Aunt Jane)
2. The name and address of any living persons you are writing about. It
is our policy to send them a complimentary copy of the magazine.
 Payment: Rate of payment determined by length of manuscript, editing
required, number of pictures or illustrations and quality of writing. A
contract including payment amount will be mailed if your article is
appropriate to our needs. HARRIS PUBLICATIONS, INC. buys about one
hundred articles about quilting per year, first rights only, no
simultaneous submissions. Payment is upon publication.

QUILT, APPLIQUÉ QUILTS, COUNTRY QUILTS, QUILT ALMANAC, QUICK QUILTS,
SAMPLER QUILTS, MINIATURE QUILT IDEAS & BIG BLOCK QUILTS, are available
by subscription or on newsstands. We suggest you read several issues
before submitting an article.
FORMATTING

Submissions must be formatted to the following Page Set Up
Specifications:

TEXT
These guidelines must be followed without exception or the submission
will be returned to the submitter for correction.

1. Use Times #12 type font and size.
2. Do not use bold, italics or underline your type.
3. Do not center any lines, title, author, etc.
4. Use left hand alignment only. Do not justify.
5. Use single spacing only. Do NOT double space.
6. Do not add page breaks or page numbers.
7. Spell out all numbers except those given for size or dates. (This
includes:  cut eight; she is seven years old; she made five quilts,
etc.)
8. When giving fractions in size or dimension please add a dash between
the whole and fraction (EX: 4-1/2”) and (cut four 4-1/2” squares).
9. Do not say grandma, my aunt, etc... grandma and aunt have a name,
what is it?
10. Only ONE (1) space after a period before the next sentence begins.
11.  Use simple, declarative sentences. Please, no exclamation points,
colons, semi-colons, dashes or dots.

Do NOT format....we import your type into a page layout program that
WILL NOT accept any formatting that you do.
GRAPHICS

1. Must be saved in jpeg Format at least 300 dpi.
2. Full captions to be printed as text and saved in separate file.
3. Short captions such as Step 1, Step 2 may be added to graphics using
Times 12 pt Bold face. Please keep these labels to a minimum--no more
than five words. Refer to magazine for example.

Remember--All Text must be saved in a separate text file.

I do NOT have time to eliminate formatting inserted by writers, so any
articles submitted that break even one of the above ten commandments of
material submission will be returned to the writer for correction. This
will hold up your material being placed in the magazine and your
payment. All corrections must be made in this one return or the
submission will be returned as final rejection.
