College Seminar
In a College Success Seminar study skills workshop we discussed the best ways to take notes either from texts or books. We discussed how to use the SQ3R method and read narrative text. The SQ3r method stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review. The method was developed in the 1970''s. Surveying is over viewing the chapter itself before you began to read it. The purpose of surveying is to gather the necessary information. Next Step in the SQ3r method is Questions. This process deals with turning both headings and subheadings into questions. Therefore, when finished beginning reading the chapter you have a purpose to read. The purpose of asking questions is to help your mind engage in learning the new material. The third step in the SQ3r process is Reading which involves everything from understanding words to determining context clues. The next step of SQ3r is to recite which includes marking important text or main ideas. Recite deals with recalling your questions and testing your memory. The last step of the SQ3r note taking process is to Review. Review is going back re-reading the entire chapter.
