Tips for Upcoming College Freshmen |
|
|
| Most freshmen students entering college seem to always get stuck in old bad habits they?ve developed with throughout high school. Examples of bad habits can be anything from bad study habits, peer pressure, impulsive decisions, procrastination and many more. Bad habits can cause students to slack off in college and even cause failure of classes. Any student with no interest in being successful in college can easily become a victim of bad habits, although there are numerous tools for a student to stay on task in college such as being organized and having schedules. |

| I suggest for new students needing advice in college as freshmen to use course corrections to help find solutions to problems. Course corrections are basically eliminating obstacles which stand in the way or are opposite of the path you plan to approach. Course corrections can help one stay on subject and helps use valuable time. |

| Another new important aspect for freshmen in college is to always have the right attitude. Attitudes can effect how your performance will turn out. The right attitude can always keep a person in order and help to relieve stress. The right attitude is pretty much being positive and committed while in school. Another Suggestion for students to be successful in college is to avoid negativity and giving up. Never become a victim of any kind whether dealing with homework or projects. A student should always respond to each mistake with motivation. Most students quit when they feel the causes of their difficulties are permanent damage. The wrong attitude can cause a lot of unexpected problems. Problems could be anything from making impulsive decisions to failing. The wrong attitude can cause a student to panic easier also. I think all freshmen in college should also accept as much feedback as possible. |

| New ideas can help students a lot in college. I myself have used ideas from both teachers and peers when dealing with projects or papers. Feedback is not only opinions from others, but sometimes also can be used as advice or motivation. Without feedback students can end up not having any direction or ideas while in school. Choices are also another important factor when students plan to accomplish goals. Most students should know to put important things first always. Some helpful suggestions to stay organized in school are to use time managing tools such as calendars or date books. Planning each day or week by a schedule can help balance out a difficult life style. Times of studying can be set accordingly. College itself is filled with environments made for studying itself such as libraries. Although, not all peers have negative influences for college students. Some college peers can join groups and start clubs of many kinds. These clubs can eventually anything from study groups of all kinds. Study groups are many of the multiple ways students can work together and have success in school. Peer pressure is also apart of daily college life as freshmen. Peers or friends can try to influence one to easily get off task more likely then anything else. The best time to join these groups is in college as freshmen. My suggestion for students to become involved in learning in school includes using their preferred learning styles, having positive attitudes and even giving a large amount of effort. From experience in order to be successful in college a student should both enjoy and be involved in learning itself. A student should determine his/hers preferred learning style while in school. One effective method for determining your learning styles is called the VARK, which stands for visual, aural, read/write, or kinesthetic learners. Another learning style inventory focuses on thinking learners, doing learners, feeling learners, and innovating learners. Each type of learner has multiple techniques and styles offered for advice to college students |

| Last, personally as a freshman I have experienced much more success in one semester of college then I have in the last two years of high school. I think as first year freshmen in college I learned any one can be successful if they show commitment and accept help from others. I discovered while in college that the right choices can help one succeed whole the wrong ones can easily cause one to not reach success. The choices made in college as a freshman will be big decisions. |
