History:

A well off, aristocratic family bought Tom a comfortable and well-provided childhood. His parents may not have been considered doting or any such thing, but they made sure he had everything he needed and more. He was soon considered a promising young lad that learnt and caught onto things quickly. Even as a child he understood and spoke of adult concepts that made others either frown or laugh.
He was sent to Public school as many of his kind before him. For him it was an impersonal and even cruel experience. A fine education for an already gifted boy produced a highly achieving and intelligent mind, but left him uncertain and deeply hurt and scarred emotionally, and even inhibited. He flew through his exams with the aid of a photographic memory and easily managed to get himself offered a place in his first choice of University, Magdalen College in Oxford, where he would take steps to try and right some of the repression put upon him at school.
It would be a very close friendship group that would do it for him. Hugo, Patrick, Daniel, Elizabeth and himself made up the inseparable group that always managed to find fun and laughter somewhere...usually at the bottom of several bottles...but were also there for each other when needed, more of a family for the five of them that would last out until present day, still as close as ever and when together managing to cause as much harmless trouble as then. It was with these four that he managed to truly allow his humour to come through. He'd always had a sharp wit about him, but it was at University he learnt to let it through.
After breezing through his degree as expected, he stayed on at the University with Elizabeth to lecture. It wouldn't be long before English, Classics and History would be his speciality and he proved himself to be a rather gifted teacher. He had the rather dubious honour of managing to become one of those teachers that are both loved and hated depending on which student was asked on the matter, never an inbetween.
However, a few years into his teaching, things started to change for him. Under the humour and smiles had always been a darker side to Tom, one of hurt, pain and insecurity that he struggled with. It began to win over him and he didn't manage well with it. After a period of further struggle, he finally admitted himself into a psychiatric hospital, and they made him remain there for a year. It was upon moving out of there he turned to writing, churning out a number of somewhat dark humoured books that for some reason proved popular amongst the English public when put to print, and then slowly gained popularity to the rest of the world. This put him in good enough spirits to take up his place at Magdalen again, enjoying his teaching as much as the writing he still did in his spare time. He manages to make time for his classes, for private students, and for the books he publishes. It was on a well deserved holiday that Tom went to Tokyo, and then planned to go on to America to visit Hugo...but the flight to Seattle went missing.
Personality:

Sarcastic, ironic, quick, intelligent, precise with a dry and sharp wit, Tom is man who holds a somewhat wicked way with words. He can put someone down with a word and a smile, but only if someone deserves it in his opinion. Although a friendly man, he is somewhat closed off in a personal sense to others unless one of his close friends from the group of five he was a part of at University. He can occasionally have fits or outbursts of sheer frustration and he can slip into black moods, at which time it is better to leave him be then try and talk with him. Yet, he has a grand sense of humour, even if sometimes sharp, loves to share a joke and sometimes holds an edge of eccentricity about him.
Tom smokes and drinks for relaxation, particularly a fine red wine, and also uses music to that aid. Tom always wears a cross, even if rather dubious of religion at times yet can't quite shake off his Catholic upbringing completely. He also always wears long sleeved tops that cover his wrists no matter what the weather, and so obviously has a preference of colder weather rather than hot, in fact, finding too much heat an annoyance.
