Background:

Jonathan was born in London, England, but his father had passed away from cancer prior to his birth. He grew up in a military family, his mother working in the British army. Since she was often away, especially abroad to America, he and his brother spent most of their time at their grandparents's home in Lincolnshire. Already from an early age Jonathan showed a talent in languages, and enjoyed learning new
things. He took German at school and excelled in his class, despite not having a great love for that particular language. When he was 13 he won a prize for an article he wrote on the environment hazards of the city and got his article published in a book alongside other articles from all over the world.
Jonathan knew very well what he'd like to do when he grew up, but was unsure how to approach it. He attended college in Newcastle, doing English Language and Communication, and got a bachelor degree in it. Then he spent a year doing an intensive journalist course in Australia, taking his time to develop his writing skills. By chance, the teacher there usually worked for the BBC, and offered Jonathan an internship after he finished the course.
Jonathan was eager to work and help out, and took a course in Japanese as soon as he heard that there was an opening slot as a reporter in Tokyo. He was 26 at the time and had spent the time previously in England and Australia. He got the job and lived in Tokyo, Japan, for the next two years.
Jonathan was on his way to Seattle with fellow BBC journalist Claire Rebecque, when they disappeared. They are both presumed dead by their families.
BBC statement:

"Jonathan was always an agreeable man, and a great resource to the BBC. We will miss him, and
hope for his family's sake that the plane and body will be located shortly."
