Background:

Hank grew up a bit of a roughshod kid.  He was a good kid and he was respectful but he didnt take much interest in his schooling and he was always looking for an excuse to be outdoors. Growing up on the ranch, Hank started early with his chores and came home at the end of the school day to finish more of them. His parents were good people, who loved their children and did everything they could to see that they grew up well. Hank grew up loving life on the ranch and everything that went with it. There was never a question that hed follow in his daddys footsteps and one day take over the spread. The family grew and so did the ranch. Hank took personal responsibility at a young age for both, much to the secret amusement of his parents.
He finished high school and, because it seemed the responsible thing to do, Hank joined the Marines for an eight year run and got a business degree out of the deal.  He made good, solid friendships in the armed forces and kept in touch with a few of them when he returned to the homestead to settle in.  His father made him co-owner of the ranch the next year and Hank never let him down.  He had planned his life with this goal in mind and he loved being home and doing what hed always known he was made for, surrounded by his close knit family and their love.  Grant went on to be a lawyer and David became a fireman.  Mal stayed on the ranch however, content to work alongside his oldest brother.
The family was starting to plan for Shannons wedding when Hank got a late night call one night from an old friend from his army days that needed help.  Next thing he knew Hank was hopping a jet to Japan to meet his friend, promising hed be back long before it was time for his baby sister to pick out her wedding dress.  And that was the last time anything went smoothly or according to plan for him.
