Background:

Although Anastasiia was born in England, she was born into two cultures, English and Russian. Her mother an English attaché that was working for the British government over in Russia, and her father a Russian doctor, their relationship was only ever meant to be a brief but passionate affair...however, when she fell pregnant with Ana, it brought them closer together and they were married before the birth. Her father gave up his job and instead began to write his own theories based on his medical expertise in order to travel back and forth between England and Russia as his wife needed for her career.

As a result, Ana’s childhood was more than a little turbulent, living a few months at a time in both England and Russia, but never for long enough periods to settle down and make new friends before she’d have to leave for the other country again.
It was hard for her to find an identity for herself as she grew up, due to a lack of stable homelife. She was loved dearly by both of her parents, but not being able to identify herself completely to either English or Russian culture, she found the task of self-discovery even harder than it usually is for young people. So, instead, she grew fascinated in other people, watching to try and learn about other people around her instead if she couldn’t understand herself. As she watched other people, she not only began to learn the ways of human nature and the start of psychology through her observations, but she was also quick to grasp that other people found her a threat. The English didn’t trust her for her Russian blood, a fact made all too clear by her English speech being tainted with a Russian accent, and the Russians didn’t like her for her English traits.
She quite literally gave up on people in her teens, deciding she could no longer be bothered to fight for trust and friendship. Instead, she turned her attention to her observations of human nature and studying books. She became enthralled with the concept of communism and it wasn’t long before she proudly called herself a communist, as she still does, despite its unpopularity. Her obsession with psychology also intensified, and she started to find out proper books on the subject, written by experts for an adult audience. She also immersed herself in literature, finding the good quality stuff as much a comment on human behaviour as the experts opinion. Well written characters by the gifted writers like Shakespeare, Samuel Richardson and Wilde were just as fascinating to pick apart psychologically as any real person.

At the age of 17, she was something of a loner by most people’s standards, no longer even bothering to try and make friends when it was such an uphill battle, and schooled at home by her father. That may be one of the reasons she was targeted, but no one will ever really know why now. One night, walking on her own in the dark back from a London museum, Ana was abducted. The police searched frantically for her, as she was the seventh girl to go missing by the work of what was known to be a serial killer that had so far eluded them. The naked bodies of the other girls had all turned up in public parks, marked with ritualistic symbols cut into their skin, their feet tied together and the body laid out on its back with the arms stretched out to either side to make the shape of a cross, and large nails pinning the hands to the ground through the palms. The cause of death was strangulation, even if the throat was cut afterwards.
The police and her parents hope remained in the fact that her body had not turned up three days after the night of abduction, as all the other girls had. However, it was the serial killer that had taken her. Ana had simply managed to talk to him and distract him for longer than the three days. She hid her fear as best she could, making every effort to engage him in conversation when the chance arose with the help of knowing about the ritualistic instruments and symbols she saw about her to give her something to get his attention, knowing she only had to engage him enough to distract him, to make him see her as a real person...it worked, and eventually he began to talk back. It wasn’t always pleasant or nice, and it wasn’t always what she wanted to hear, but it delayed him, his normal pattern interrupted. It was in the end enough, and having to suffer his disturbing words and behaviour proved to be worth it as it bought the police more time to find them, which they did on the seventh day.
She was returned to her relieved parents with the symbols carved into her thigh, and she was never quite the same after her ordeal. She was plagued with nightmares, sunk into depressions and closed herself off even more from people. If she found it difficult to trust others before, she found it impossible afterward. She grew intolerable to other people touching her and began to cut herself, self-harming in an attempt to find some relief for the pain and fear. She became addicted to the prescribed drugs given to her, and became reliant on them to knock her into a dreamless state at night, and keep her awake and level during the day.

She threw herself back into her studies of politics and psychology, her books far easier distractions and companions than people and the outside world. It was a worried father who urged her to study for a degree in psychology from home, trying to give her some focus in hopes it would give her back some motivation, and distract her at the same time.
She achieved the highest possible standards due to her natural instincts and understanding of human nature and from her immersion in her books and observations of other people, and the small victory gave her the confidence she needed to start to rebuild her life and give her the motivation her father had hoped for. She applied to work with the police, turning her attention to criminal psychology. Some said she had an unhealthy obsession with the mentality of killers, particularly serial killers and ritualistic killings...in truth, she found it an outlet to try and understand why he had done what he had to her and to try and stop others from doing the same...but whether it was healthy or not, she decided not to think about.
Ana became a highly acclaimed criminal profiler, working with the police on murder cases to profile the kind of person that would be committing the crimes in order to speed up their search to stop them from getting to their next victims. She became particularly well known as an expert in providing psychological profiles in ritualistic style murders, and it was on the way to a conference in Seattle that her plane went missing.
Personality:

Ana keeps very much to herself and doesn’t take kindly to other people sticking their nose into her business. She is quiet, and only speaks when she has something important to say. Very often, she can be seen watching people, silently assessing them psychologically through what they say and do. She is highly intelligent, but people often dismiss her because of her quiet nature. She has very few friends, and those she does have are because of the efforts they make to maintain trust between them, not the other way around. Ana is still a communist and believes deeply in doing things for the greater good of others, despite her silence and lack of interaction with other people. She often refuses to argue with people, finding it a waste of energy, and will instead shrug or tell someone to stop talking rather than being drawn into an argument.
Special Notes:

Ana still has the scars of both the symbols cut into her thigh by the serial killer, and of the cuts she made herself in her forearms from when she self-harmed. She can’t stand people touching her without permission and will violently pull away. She only eats when she has to, and even then only a very small amount, living with no appetite.

*** WRITER’S NOTE: Ana received a blow to the head in the crash. She is suffering from amnesia and cannot remember who she is or any of the above ***
