The Oosterdam anchored off of Cabo San Lucas and tender service was started early. Part of our group met at 8:30 a.m. in the Martini Lounge area to take our privately booked excursion on the Rissalena. The Rissalena is a 37 foot power catamaran owned and operated by Pronatur/Pro-Tours. Based on a favorable review by Host Anne of Cruise Critic, part of our group decided to reserve a morning whale watching tour.
The tender process was quick and effortless, and our group set foot in Cabo San Lucas just before 9:00 a.m. Once in the marina area, it was disappointing to discover that passengers hadn't heeded the announcement over the ship intercom AND in the daily program not to take and produce ashore. Bags were checked and there was a "sizeable" pile of fruit that had been "seized" from Oosterdam passengers!
Since it was a beautiful day, our group decided to stroll around the marina to where the Rissalena was docked. Our three hour cruise included an open bar (with the best margaritas I've EVER had - fresh lime juice), and a buffet lunch of chips and salsa, fresh guacamole, grilled chicken, Spanish rice, and pasta salad. The regular captain, Edward Padilla had business elsewhere for the day. However, his substitute was extremely friendly and knowledgeable.
We knew that our excursion was at the very end of the whale watching season in Cabo San Lucas, and some passengers did feel that they saw one whale "fluking." However, it might have been the effect of the margaritas! Our captain for the day pointed out various landmarks, and we dropped anchor for 1/2 hour or so in a beautiful inlet with the most amazing color of green water I've ever seen. Passengers were allowed to feed the fish, and/or swim from the boat. A wonderful experience!
Our excursion ended at 1:00 p.m., and everyone was sorry to be dropped off on shore again. I walked around Cabo San Lucas, and found an Internet caf to post to the Cruise Critic message board.
Once back on the Oosterdam, I took a "little break" and then showered and dressed for cocktails in the Crow's Nest. Still not hungry enough for dinner, I visited the casino once again to make my "daily donation," and had a late snack in the Lido Buffet at 11:00 p.m.
