Hi, Just happen upon your website while looking for ways to train my almost 10 year old blonde Cocker. His name is Bayly and for the life of us we don't know how this happen! But we are willing to help him live a good life. We have another cocker also named Morgan that is 4yrs old so I'm hoping that Morgan like your Spenser will be of some help and watch for him. We have considered a very mild training collar since we have alot of property and fear he may wander. But I think we are going to hold off f r awhile and get his attention other ways like balls, etc. We are also going to put a bell on him! The indignity of it all eh? I like your tips and will try using them. Do you know of anyone else that has trained an older dog with this problem? I'm so earful that he will feel bad because he might think people aren't talking to him! Silly aren't I? He was obedience trained to some hand signals like come, stay and sit. So we will just have to try to re-teach him those again. Thanks again for the site nd keep up the good work. Suz and Bayly too!

I forgot to mention that I actually saw my first coyote in the wild three days ago on Nov.14, Tues. There is a nature preserve in the city, on the north side of Chicago that I discovered about three months back. At the preserve my wife and I can see deer, geese, raccoons, opossum etc... however on this particular day I went alone to the preserve hoping to see any and all wildlife possible. For the past 6 or 7 months I have been keenly interested in seeing a coyote as thay are about as wild as it gets in th city. For months I would visit our local forest preserve, hoping to "happen" into a coyote as I walk in some very rough and unmarked trails, deep in the thick of the woods. (I have come across a fox in my mid-day walks though!)Anyhow, this nature preserve is about 40? acres I think. It includes a wetland, a woodland trail, a savannah and a prairie, all carefully arranged by humankind. Well, I had always hoped to see this coyote, that I have wanted to see for a very long time and finally, as I was walking E on the trail back to the main house, my furry little fried came strolling down a trail that faced S., bringing us heading together as if at an intersection. Well, I think I felt faint at first because my immediate thought was that this was somebody's dog who had been left behind because he was unwanted. Then, as if in a flash , I could hardly believe what and who I was seeing for the first time! When it came to me that I was actually seeing a coyote, my heart must have jumped. Maybe I was afraid, fearful hat I was facing some kind of a wild dog, which it is, but as soon as I recognized whathe was, he was soon gone. And then I realized that he had acted just as you and others said he would. He looked at briefly, sniffed the ground, kept his eyes on me, and never stopped moving for the most part. Since Tuesday I have been so charged up about my coyote sighting that I will have to go back next week and spend a few more hours there. Oh , and one last bit of info. on the coyote. When I saw him/her, he looked a bit mangy, as in scruffy fur, thin. I was hoping that maybe you could e- mail me back more info. as to why he looked so unhealthy. He moved and walked with ease and didn't seem at all sick, but I felt sorry for him. Leslie br>

I am very interested in coyotes too! I love all animals, but feel very sorry for the wild ones as they seem like they need help with food , care etc... I know that that is just "nature" but I still end up feeling that I'd like to try and help them out by eeding them even though I know it is wrong. Anyway, please feel free to e-mail me more info. on coyotes, wolves, coydogs and wolf-dog mixes. Thanks, Leslie

I really enjoyed your site..especially the pages on coyotes and the letter exchange between you and the hunter. We have Coyotes here where I live, but I do not mention them to many people, because the Coyote hunters will arrive; and unfortuantely, they a e the types that have no respect for anyone or thing. I have chickens and ducks that free range..I have never lost one to a coyote. We also have dogs, 4 of them. My dogs, know their property line, and mark there territory, the coyotes respect that mark. Here is a little tale for you, here in my county, we have (the real problem) a human population growth problem..but the county say's a deer population problem..so they brought coyotes in to hunt the deer. Now i am not an expert on such matters, but coyote will take small game before they hunt deer. To tell the truth, I don't know if coyotes hunt healthy adult deer. (we have the large white tail deer here). So now, there is still a "deer problem" and now a so-called coyote problem. (people who move into t e country from the city and see a coyote and get scared) but to be honest, there have been some small dogs killed by coyotes. So now, the state brought in big cats..to kill the coyote (except, again, i am not an expert) but the cats and the coyotes will b competing for the small game) plus they have brought wolves in. Now the the wolves will help control the deer population. My prediction is in a few years..no small game, cats and coyotes will be killing off livestock..more "professional" hunters will be alled in to kill off the cats and coyotes..wolves will be blamed for sheep and calves being killed..which the coyotes and cats have killed, because their natural prey is gone...gee wonder how man can improve more on nature?????? sorry..started to rant there..but i did enjoy your site!!!1

I really enjoyed your website. Especially about the deaf dog. I was looking at your web site to educate myself on coyotes as my husband and I will be moving to Arizona soon. We have bought 36 acres of land, high in the mountains of Arizona 30 miles outside of Kingman. The land is inhabited with a variety of wild an mals including coyote, bobcat, mountain lions, etc... I'm very concerned for our two Jack Russell Terriers and am trying to educate myself and my husband on the dangers to the dogs. It has become quite a difficult task to convince my husband that our dogs will not be safe. He wants to let the dogs "run free when we get up there and minimizes any dangers. If you have any facts and stories that may help me, I would INCREDIBLY, SINCERELY appreciate any help I can get. Thank you. Laura

I thoroughly enjoyed your site. Thank You. Once, while hunting mule deer in Eastern Oregon, while sitting on a rimrock sidehill, A jackrabbit came flying down the trail, with a deset lynx right on his tail. I was completely awed, and totally surprised. About 5 minutes later, another lynx came wa king slowly down the same trail. This time, I had enough wits about me to look at him (and it was definately HIM, I could see his nut sack) through my rifle scope. He was oblivious to me, and totally intent on what was out ahead. I waited a few minutes and eased down where I could watch. The male cat, caught up with the female, who had caught the jackrabbit. He intimidated her out of her kill, fed himself while she sat patiently a few yards away. When he was finished, he went to her, "nuzzled" (for lack of a better word, it was a somewhat aggressive nuzzle) her, and took her spot, while she went and ate her portion. The pair was either unaware of me (doubtful), or just too concerned with their own doings. I backed out quietly leaving them to digest their meal in the sun. Between hunting, fishing, and working in the woods, I have been lucky enough to see many really neat things. But this little drama in nature is probably my fondest recollection. Thanks again for the website. Phil

I've seen several gray foxes and countless coyotes in the Sonoran desert. However, while hiking last weekend, I saw a wild dog in a remote area north of the town of New River that I could not positively identify. It was at least as big as a full-grown coy te, but it had a smaller head and an amazingly long, full tail. It's color was just sort of brownish/grey. I would guess it was a gray fox, but it was so much bigger than any fox I've ever seen. Whatever it was, it was definitely wild, not domestic. Got a y ideas? Also, the wild dog was hanging out in a 1,000-year-old Hohokam Indian pueblo at the peak of a small but rugged mountain. I don't know if that will help with my question, but his "den" was just kind of interesting.

Think I prefer the solitary sound rather than the whole pack carrying on at one time. Thanks, DWG

Interesting page. Coyotes are considered to be exotic (non-native) animals in my region of the country, and are therefore considered to be a bit of a threat to the natural ecosystem. We are a third grade class in Tempe, AZ. We found your site by doing a geocities search on tarantulas. We really enjoyed your page, especially your desert artwork. We liked it so much that we added it to our Geoguide tour. We also thought it was cool o read about your dog being trained to respond to hand signals, because our teacher's dog is too!
