Desert Connections' Photo Album

Out and About ...Again Taken May 23rd & June 2nd, 2002

I haven't had much time for photo's lately, but here is a couple of interesting ones.

Pioneer Walkway "Out in Bloom"
Today (April 25th) was overcast, but allowed a perfect time to
take some pictures of Pioneer Walkway located across from the motel strip in Osoyoos.

Compare these pictures with page 2 of the "Around Osoyoos" pictures taken March 10th.

Out and About Taken April 24th, 2002
Our weather, during the Spring, can be a little unpredictable. Last night we had some
strong winds which ended by nightfall, then a temperature drop.
I heard it got down around -2 C. That isn't too bad during the Winter, but during blossom
time it's a disaster for the fruit crop. Cold temperatures, along with the irrigation, did
produce some interesting pictures.
We also went up to the Lookout spot on
Anarchist Mtn. and got some shots of Osoyoos and the lake.

Inside a Greenhouse Taken April 15th, 2002
With thanks to John Slater, we were able to tour Desert Edge Nursery
& Greenhouses. Desert Edge is located off 74th Ave. in Osoyoos.
John said he planted his seedlings about mid March.
It's hard to tell from the pictures, but the vines are quite a bit taller than I am and I'm 6'1".

Vaseaux Lake   (Map)
Between Oliver and Okanagan Falls (South of Penticton) is the Vaseaux Lake Bird
Sanctuary. These pictures were taken April 13th, 2002. The leaves on the trees are just
starting to come out. There are a few birds, but not many. The boardwalk passage
through the woods makes the  trail an easy one and you don't get your feet wet.
There are two benches along  the way where you can rest or just pause to
take in the beauty.

Blossoms,Vineyards and Old Buildings
These pictures were taken between Osoyoos and Oliver
(20 minutes north of Osoyoos) on April 12th, 2002.
Apricot blossoms are the first blossoms to bloom in the valley.
These pictures are of the Burrowing Owl Vineyard on the native reserve. It seems that
for miles,  where once was sage brush, is now grapes. Vineyards are springing up
all over. The old buildings are of the Haynes ranch buildings.

Haynes Point Wetlands
What a difference a couple of weeks make. These photos were taken April 8th, 2002.
We even managed to see some critters, this trip.
Sometimes I wish my digital camera had a telephoto lens.

Haynes Point Wetland Project
These photos were taken March 23rd, 2002.
Life is just starting to return to normal.
We noticed quite a bit of damage from the area's beavers,
the ponds were at low water levels and not too
many birds around. In the Summer this area is alive with birds.

Around Osoyoos
Photos taken around Osoyoos just before Spring. (March 10th)
Normally we are quite warm at this time of year, but this year was
the exception. In fact a few days after I took these pictures we
were back into Winter with cold north winds and snow.
