Several hours later, Trina got up. She was burning up and uncomfortable. It had not been so bad at first, but it had worsened gradually. Now, every time she moved, it hurt. She touched her forearm and was surprised to feel the heat emanating from it. Drew was asleep and Trina was glad her friend was getting rest.
She walked out of the room and straight into Ezra.
"Trina, what are you doing up?"
"It's so very hot, I couldn't sleep. And I'm worried about Drew."
He looked at her and frowned. "I'm worried too. When I can't sleep, I make myself a hot toddy. I was just on my way to the kitchen. Would you like one?"
"What is it?"
"Earl Gray tea with a shot of brandy. At least that is how I make it." Ezra went back down the stairs and Trina followed him into the kitchen. He stopped and stared at her. "You must be hurting pretty badly."
"How did you know?" Trina asked.
"You have quite a sunburn."
Trina looked at her arms and saw they were bright red.
"Have you never had a sunburn before?"
Trina shook her head. "It hurts."
Ezra nodded. "Indeed they do. With your complexion, I'm surprised none of us noticed."
"You had other things to worry about."
"Let me get you some aloe."
"Mr. Dunne told me to use some aloe, but I didn't understand why."
"Of course. My apologies. I've been quite thoughtless." He left the room and came back with some salve. "Apply this to your skin. Do not rub it in."
She did as instructed on her arms. "Oh, that feels better. Thank you Ezra." Trina smiled at him.
"You're going to have to be very careful while you are here. I would recommend you always apply sunscreen prior to going out." He looked to her as he poured the tea and added a dollop of brandy. "Here we are. One hot toddy."
Trina took it and sipped it. "It's good." They sat and silently drank their tea.
"Shouldn't you contact someone to let them know you're all right, Trina?" Ezra asked.
Trina shook her head. "No, but thank you."
"No one is expecting you in Los Angeles? You traveled from Scotland all alone?" Ezra was incredulous. That was quite a journey to undertake as it was, and then to have no one on the other end of the trip, Ezra simply was stunned.
"No one expecting me. No one knows where I am. I'd like to keep it like that." Trina spoke quietly, but Ezra heard a tinge of sadness in her voice. Before he could ask any more, she stood up.
"Good night Ezra. Thank you for the tea, and the salve."
"Put that on again in the morning. If it isn't starting to feel better after Drew's arraignment, we'll have you visit the clinic and get something stronger."
Trina nodded and covered a yawn.
"Go on upstairs, Trina. Get some rest."
She nodded and went upstairs.
Ezra watched her walk up and wondered about that statement. Catriona MacKinnon was running from something. Everything added up to that, her incredible fear of deportation to her comment about not wanting anyone to know where she was. He wondered if she would stay around long enough for him to find out.
Ezra knew he wouldn't find out this evening. He looked at his watch and decided he needed to get some rest as well.
Drew stood looking herself over in the mirror. In less than one hour she would be in court. She was wearing a long yellow and white sundress with spaghetti straps she had purchased in Cancun. Ezra had selected it. He told her he wanted her to look as sweet and innocent as possible, and she would not be wearing any of her trademark mini skirts and tops that bared her midriff. Drew dressed sophisticated but sexy.
Ezra paced outside the bathroom as Drew applied her makeup. She rolled her eyes as he complained "Drew the arraignment starts at noon it doesn't mean be there by noon. Mr. Dunne is downstairs waiting with Trina. We need to go." He was about to knock on the door as she opened it.
"Well do I look innocent?" She had her long blond hair cascading down her back.
Ezra frowned. "Not quite yet." He walked into the bathroom grabbed a brush and a few pony tail ties and led her to her room.
"What are you doing Ezra?" She looked at him as he shut the door and locked it.
"Have a seat young lady. I'm going to French braid your hair."
Drew giggled as Ezra started to do her hair. "You know, big brother, I bet the guys on the force would love to see this side of you."
Ezra pulled some of her hair back.
"Ouch easy Ezra."
"Are you forgetting why I know how to do this? I recall a certain ten year old little girl crying because all her friends mothers French braided their hair before they went to the beach."
Drew turned and looked to him. "That was the summer mother took us to Nantucket. You felt badly for me and figured out how to French braid my hair. I had a lot of fun that summer Ezra."
"So did I. Some of my fondest memories." He was taken off guard as Drew hugged him and buried her face in his shoulder.
"I'm sorry, Ezra."
"Hey now" he patted her back "things will be okay. I'll do my best to get you out of this mess. But I have to tell you that I am disappointed. Doesn't mean I don't love you. You do understand that right?"
Drew nodded "I love you too Ezra."
"Now turn around and let me fix your hair." After he was through he had her stand up and turn around. "Much better." He smiled and they walked over to the door. "This stays between us right?"
"Of course." She hugged him again before they headed downstairs.
JD smiled as Drew and Ezra came downstairs. "Miss Standish, you look nice."
Drew looked to Ezra and saw him smiling to Trina she turned to JD. "JD? That's your name right? Please call me Drew."
"Okay Drew." JD smiled shyly. "I have to tell you that Buck tried to get me to call in sick so he could come be your escort."
Drew's eyes lit up as Ezra scowled. Trina walked over and looked to Drew "you going to be okay?"
Drew nodded. "How you feeling? I'm so sorry I didn't think to tell you to use some sunscreen."
"It still hurts, but I don't know why you would have thought of it. I didn't." Trina smiled to Drew.
"Are we ready?" JD looked to the group.
"No," Drew moaned and pouted as Ezra led her out. Trina and JD followed.
Ten minutes later the four walked into the courthouse. Buck Wilmington met them right inside the door and whistled. "The wind blew, the clouds parted, and out came the sun!" He made his way over to Drew. "I got to say darling you sure are the prettiest thing I've ever seen. Like a bright ray of Sunshine."
Ezra led Drew past Buck and looked back to the man. "We need to have a discussion later."
Vin shook his head and slapped Buck on the back. "Pard, you're treading on dangerous ground here."
"She's a knockout, Vin."
"Well, she's also Ezra's little sister."
Drew sat down on the bench outside the courtroom. Ezra smiled to Trina. "Have a seat, my dear, might be a bit yet."
Chris walked over and ignored Drew's scowl. "Rafe's in with the judge now."
Buck ignored Ezra's scowl as well and went over and leaned on the wall next to Drew. "You doing okay Sunshine?"
Drew looked up to him and raised her eyebrow. "Sunshine?"
"Yeah." Buck flashed a grin.
For some reason, Drew felt at ease with Buck, despite her brothers warnings last night in his discussion with her. "Okay." She returned his smile.
Everyone looked over as Rafe emerged from the Judge's chambers. "Standish, he wants to speak to you."
Drew paled, stood up and walked towards the room. "Okay."
Rafe walked over. "Not you, your brother." He smiled to her and led her back over to her seat.
Ezra looked back to Drew then walked into the chambers.
Rafe stood by Buck looking down to Drew. He noticed her hands shaking. "It's going to be okay, Drew. You mind if I call you Drew?"
Buck raised his eyebrow and looked to Rafe.
"You can call me, Drew," she quietly answered and looked to Rafe as he knelt in front of her.
"I just want to know why you didn't pull over? I mean I probably would have let you off."
"Really?"
"Yes really. From what I can see, other then the excessive speeding, you're not a threat to society. Only person you're hurting is yourself. " He looked to Trina. "Well you put your friend here in danger as well. But I don't think you realized that."
"If I had, I wouldn't have done it."
Rafe smiled and stood back up. "Try and relax and just listen to what the judge has to say. Okay?"
Drew nodded. They waited quietly for the next fifteen minutes until Ezra emerged from the chamber.
Ezra walked over. "It's time." He looked sternly to Drew, and she tried to read his face but couldn't. "I want you to let me do the talking in there okay? I mean it, Drew; do not complain, just listen."
Before she knew it, she was standing up in front of the courtroom with Ezra by her side and the Judge looking right to her. "Are you aware of the extent of the charges here, Miss Standish?"
Drew was in shock and just stood there and nodded.
"Miss Standish, you will have to speak up."
"Yes, sir." Her voice cracked.
The Judge sat and read off the list of charges being brought against her. He paused and looked to her. "I had a conference with the arresting officer, Ramierez, earlier, and he requested that all the charges be dropped."
Drew's eyes lit up.
"Unfortunately, I don't think that would be a wise idea."
A few moans were heard in the courtroom.
The Judge hit his gavel on the desk. "Order in the court." He looked to Drew again "Miss Standish, I feel that it is in your best interest that you be put into the custody of your brother for the next six months, where you will be placed on probation."
Drew sighed. Then she looked to the Judge. "Hold on what does this mean? I need to get back to LA."
Ezra spoke up. "Drew, that's not an option."
"Not an option? I have an audition next week. I live there."
"Drew, please."
"Ezra, what did you say to him?"
"Order in the court!"
Drew and Ezra looked to Judge Travis.
"Young lady, I don't care what you will be missing, and I will have to inform you that if you do leave the state, you will be considered a fugitive. Not only that, you can not leave this jurisdiction for more than twenty-four hours unless escorted. Do I make myself clear?"
Drew nodded.
"Also, I'm sentencing you to ninety-six hours community service which will be done at the Organ Pipe National Monument where you will be under the supervision of a Miss Allison Steele. Your drivers license will be revoked for the duration of your probation as well."
"My license? How will I get to this Organ place then?"
"How you get there is not my concern; you will serve this community service and if you chose not too, I will place you in jail. Am I making myself clear here, Miss Standish?"
Ezra spoke up. "I shall make sure she gets to and from work or make arrangements for her."
Judge Travis nodded and went on to talk a bit more.
Drew was quiet and the next ten minutes went by in a blur. Before she knew it she was seated in a booth at the Standish Grille fighting tears. She hated to cry, especially in front of others.
Trina slid in across from her, and Buck sat down next to Drew. Trina smiled as JD got a chair from another table and brought it over.
Ezra glared to Buck for a moment then frowned when he saw Drew was fighting tears. "You should eat something." He stood watching everyone.
Trina looked to Drew then Ezra. "She likes chips."
"Chips for lunch?" JD questioned.
Ezra smiled. "I think what Trina is referring too is French Fries." He nodded to Trina. "We call chips French-Fries in America."
Trina shrugged. "I guess I have a lot to learn."
"You will." He looked to Drew again as Buck took her hand.
"You should eat something, Sunshine."
Drew didn't take her hand away, but she also didn't say anything. She just sat starring out the window.
"I'll get you some cheese fries." He watched as Chris brought Drew over a soda.
"Hey, pard." Buck smiled as Chris looked to Drew.
"I thought you might be thirsty." Everyone waited for Drew's reaction.
Drew looked to Chris. She assumed the man hated her after her outburst yesterday. She reached out and took the soda. "Thanks."
Chris nodded then looked from Ezra to Buck. "Hey Buck, why don't you join Rafe, Vin, and me for a game of pool? We need another player."
"I'm going to stay here with Sunshine." He watched as Chris gave him a look then walk away.
"Drew wants cheese fries what would you like?" Ezra looked to Trina.
"I'll have what Drew's having. And a diet soda, please."
"I'll take a chilidog, Ezra." JD spoke up.
"You and Mr. Wilmington will have to purchase your own lunch."
"I got it, Ezra." Buck stood up. "Let me take care of this one." He winked to Drew then looked back to Ezra.
Ezra followed Buck to order and pulled him back. "Don't do me any favors."
"I'm just getting lunch, Ezra. Since when do you turn down anything free?"
"Look, Buck, just stop this okay?"
"Stop what, Ezra?"
"I'm not going to say this again: Stay away from Drew."
Buck leaned on the bar looked to Dwayne who was wiping out glasses then looked to Ezra. "You can't make me stay away."
"I'm not asking you, Buck. I'm telling you. Why? Why her?"
"In case you haven't noticed, Ezra, your sister is a knockout, and she's also a nice person. One I really would like to get to know better. Has it ever occurred to you that I might happen to care about her?"
Ezra threw his head back and laughed. "Care about her? Oh, please Buck. You're not ever going to settle down, and I for one don't want to have to pick up the pieces of my sister's broken heart once you tire of her."
Buck ignored Ezra's last comments and ordered. When he was through, he faced Ezra again "You think you know me so well, don't you? Who the hell are you to tell me how I feel? If it weren't for the fact I don't want to upset Sunshine anymore, I'd punch you right now."
"Her name is Drew."
Buck scowled at Ezra and walked back over to the table. He stopped in his tracks when he noticed Rafe in his seat. "I thought you were playing pool with Chris?"
"I was just keeping your seat warm, Buck." Rafe stood up and slapped his back. He nodded to Trina. "Nice to meet you." Then he smiled to Drew. "Things are going to work out. I'll talk to you later." He smiled to Buck again and walked off.
Buck sat down. "What did he want?"
JD shrugged. "Just to talk is all. Wasn't that nice of him to try and get the charges dropped for Drew?"
Buck glared to JD.
"What?"
Trina spoke up. "You're quiet Drew."
"I'm sorry." Drew looked to Trina.
"It's okay." Trina rubbed her arm and frowned.
Ezra walked back over and sat down next to Trina "Should be just a few minutes." Trina nodded as Ezra looked to Drew.
Drew finally spoke up. "Ezra, isn't there anything you can do to make it so I can go back to LA? Can't I do some kind of community service there?"
"No, Drew, I can't. And what is this about an audition?"
"I was going in for a supporting role on a sitcom."
"That's great Sunshine!" Buck beamed proudly.
"Aye. Sounds wonderful," Trina said.
"You been in any movies?" JD eyes lit up.
"Oh please," Ezra interrupted before Drew could answer and looked to Drew. "You? An actress? Sister dear, you've pulled some crazy stunts but there's no way you could ever be an actress. Try another excuse."
Drew's face fell, and Buck glared at Ezra.
"Ezra, she's serious." Trina looked to Drew, very worried about her friend.
Drew couldn't take it anymore; she was not about to cry in front of all of them. She stood up and climbed across Buck's lap, knocking JD's drink over. "I'm sorry, JD," she managed to say before she ran towards the door.
Trina looked to Ezra. "That was her dream," she said as Buck got up to follow Drew.
He turned to her. "You're serious?"
"Aye. She told me all about it on the way from Houston. She even has an agent."
Ezra nodded and frowned. "Well, even if it was her dream, it is not a safe one."
Trina shrugged. "Since when are dreams safe? Is it hot in here?" she asked, finishing her drink. Trina fished an ice cube out of the glass and rubbed it on her arms.
Ezra looked to her. "You really should have that looked at if it is still bothering you."
Drew ran right into Nathan as he was coming in with Josiah.
"Whoa. Easy there." Nathan tried to stop her, but she pushed him away and ran out the door.
Josiah looked to Buck, who was following her. "She okay?"
Buck shrugged then left the Grille. He spotted Drew walking ahead of him. "Sunshine wait up!"
Drew stopped and wiped her eyes but kept her back to him. "Go away."
"Where you going?"
Drew turned and looked to him. Her eyes were swollen and blood shot from crying. "I don't know."
Buck pulled her to him holding her close. "Hey, this place isn't so bad. Especially now." He wiped a tear from her cheek as she looked up to him and led her over to a bench in the shade. "What does LA have that we don't?" He waggled his eyebrows at her, trying to get her to smile.
"My life. My friends, the beach, McDonalds, the mall."
"Okay other then that."
"Freedom," Drew mumbled.
"I tell you what. Ajo has a McDonalds; we could drive over there if you want? You'd have an escort."
"Mr. Wilmington, my sister is not going anyplace with you." They looked up to see Ezra standing over them.
"Well now, I think that's up to Drew."
"I can't leave Trina." She looked to Buck. "But thank you."
"I'd like to speak with my sister, so if you'd excuse us."
"Only if she wants me to go."
Drew looked to Ezra then Buck. "I'm okay. Thanks." She hugged Buck.
Buck held onto her a moment then stood up, looking to Ezra. "Make her cry again and I'll hurt you."
"That works both ways." Ezra looked to him as he walked off.
Ezra took a seat next to Drew, taking her hand "I'm sorry about all of this. I know you don't want to be here. Thing is I want you here. I do. I think it's the best thing for you. For us. You're all the family I have Drew, because we both know mother really doesn't count."
Drew looked up to Ezra then put her head on his shoulder. "I suppose I don't have much choice. You could always move to LA, too, Ezra. I don't understand why you chose to stay here."
Ezra shrugs. "I don't really know the answer to that either. But it's my home now. I'll drive to LA next week to collect your things. But, right now, it's at least 110 in the shade, could we possibly go back inside where's it's air-conditioned? Please?"
"Okay." Drew smiled and stood up, allowing Ezra to lead her back into the Grille. She smiled over to Buck who was now playing pool with Nathan, Vin, and Chris. Josiah stood at the bar talking with Rafe and Dwayne. Rafe waved to her from the bar and she smiled back taking a seat next to Trina. She missed the look Buck gave Rafe after the wave.
Trina passed Drew her plate. "They're pretty good. Eat something please."
"Okay." She smiled to her friend and ate a few fries.
Ezra smiled to Trina. "Can I get anyone anything to drink?"
"How about a bottle of Rum?" Drew rolled her eyes as Ezra scowled. "Only kidding another diet coke please, and Trina likes strawberry daiquiris."
"Would you care for one?"
"Sure." Trina smiled and watched as Ezra went to the bar to get the drinks. She turned to Drew who was starring at Buck. "You should go talk to him."
"What?" Drew turned her attention to Trina.
"He seems nice and to really care about you."
"How do you know?"
"Are you blind?" Trina smiled. "I mean the man chased you outside, not to mention you missed the look he gave Ezra when he upset you too. He brought you pizza last night. And you seem to like him too."
Drew shrugs. "I guess so, but he's a bit older then me. Has to be at least 28."
"So?"
"You know what this place needs? Some music." Drew stood up. "Any requests?"
"Aerosmith." Trina smiled and watched as Drew made her way over to the jukebox.
Over at the pool table JD waved his arm in front of Buck "earth to Buck, your shot."
Buck grinned and handed his pool stick to Rafe who was walking by headed to the jukebox as well. "Rafe will take my place." Buck slapped his back and went over and stood behind Drew placing his hands on her hips looking over her shoulder. "Whatcha playing Sunshine?"
Just then Aerosmith's 'Jaded' filled the room. Drew tapped her feet and giggled as Buck reached around and selected 'Sunshine' by Aerosmith.
"I like them too and looks like they wrote a song for ya." He nuzzled the back of her neck then smiled.
Drew leaned against Buck and smiled as he wrapped his arms around her. They stayed like that, listening to the music. When it ended, she turned and looked up to him. "My brother told me that you were bad for me."
"He has a right to think that Sunshine. I'm no angel. Thing is what do you think?"
"I think you're real nice." Just then 'Sunshine' started.
Buck took Drew's hand "let's dance."
Drew nodded as he led her out to the dance floor and swayed with him as he wrapped his arms around her to dance.
They call her sunshine
The kind that everybody knows
Yeah yeah sunshine.
She finer than a painted rose
Yeah yeah
Sunshine
Yeah
Her kind of love's
What I adore
Buck sang the lyrics into Drew's ear, causing her to giggle. He lifted her up and spun her around.
Ezra walked over to Trina and handed her her daiquiri, looking out to the dance floor. He muttered something under his breath as he sat next to Trina.
"Thank you, Ezra," Trina said, sipping her daiquiri.
"You sure you're feeling all right? You look a little flushed," Ezra commented.
"I'm sure it is just the sunburn." She leaned back against the wall and rested her head in the corner.
"Why don't you like him?" Trina asked, looking to Ezra.
"I don't want to see Drew hurt."
"Neither do I. She's very sweet." Trina looked at Ezra.
After the dance ended Drew looked over to Trina and Ezra. "I need to go. Thanks for the dance." She smiled walked backwards for a bit and blushed as Buck winked to her.
Ezra stood up as Drew made her way back over to the table. "Well ladies, why don't we go on home?"
Both nodded and followed Ezra out of the Grille. Ezra threw his arms up in the air when they got outside.
"What's wrong Ezra?" Drew asked.
"I don't have my car, it's at the garage undergoing a minor repair. That's why JD gave us a ride to the courthouse."
Trina shrugged. "We can walk. It's not too far."
Ezra shook his head and led them back inside. "Not with that burn. You shouldn't be out in the sun right now."
Buck walked over as the three walked back inside and grinned. "Need a ride Ezra?"
"Unfortunately, yes. And you appear to be the only one offering."
Buck offered Drew his arm.
Drew took it and looked up to him as he led her out. "You always this polite? I mean no other guy offered me his arm before."
"You've just been hanging around the wrong guys, Sunshine."
Trina started to follow and swayed very suddenly as the ground seemed to move. Ezra noticed and grabbed her quickly, supporting her. "We need to get her to a doctor," Ezra commented.
"I'm fine." Trina protested.
Drew rushed over to Trina with Buck. "No you're not. You're burning up. And don't tell me that doesn't hurt."
"I know the new doc ain't opened his doors yet, but maybe he's in and will see her anyway," Buck offered.
"Indeed." Ezra helped Trina over to the car and got in the back with her. Drew sat in the front, looking back. "Don't argue, Trina."
Trina looked to Drew. "It will be all right Trina. I promise."
Buck drove the two blocks to the doctor's office. A sign proclaiming "Clinic: Dr. Kenin Darnell" hung out front and the door was open. The group got out of the car and walked in. Boxes were everywhere and it was obvious that the doctor was still in the process of unpacking his things.
"Hello?" Drew called out.
"We're not open yet," a female voice called out.
Ezra led Trina over to one of the boxes. "You sit down right here."
"Ma'am, I know you're not open, but we need to see the doctor," he said, walking over to the counter. Ezra could see a woman bent down, stocking a shelf.
She looked up to him, nodded and stood up. "All right." Dr. Darnell brushed her hands against her legs. "Let me get cleaned up a bit."
Ezra nodded and walked back towards where Drew was sitting next to Trina, who was leaning against her. Buck hovered near Drew. "It will just be a moment."
Dr. Darnell washed off her hands and walked out into the waiting area. "Okay, how can I help you?" She looked at the group, and immediately assessed the problem. The red-haired woman had obviously gotten more sun than was good for her by a good measure. "When did she get that burn?"
"Yesterday," Drew replied.
"And you're just bringing her in now? Has she been getting enough fluids?"
Trina looked up to her. "Aye, I've been drinking tea."
The doctor shook her head. "I think I have some lidocaine around here. That should help with the pain." Dr. Darnell looked to her. "I'm sorry, but my examination rooms aren't ready just yet. I'm really not prepared to see patients right now. Have you noticed any blistering?" She took Trina's right arm and examined it.
"Blistering?"
"Bubbles under the skin," Dr. Darnell said while looking at her other arm. "I don't see any. Looks like you got yourself a pretty bad first degree sunburn. Ideally, I'd like to have you in overnight and put you on an IV drip to get you rehydrated, but the closest hospital is Tucson. What I'm going to recommend is that you get plenty of fluids with electrolytes, something like Gatorade or all-sport."
Ezra nodded. "Positively vile stuff."
Dr. Darnell smiled. "Yes it is, but it does help heal the body. Most important, nothing with caffeine or alcohol until that goes away." She stood up. "Let me see about that lidocaine. Excuse me."
Trina nodded.
The doctor walked to the back and left them.
"Drew, we can drop Ezra and Trina off at his house then go to my place to get some Gatorade, unless Ezra has some." Buck looked to Ezra.
"No, I don't." Ezra looked to Buck.
"I'm sorry, Buck. I really should stay with her."
Ezra smiled to Drew.
"That's all right, Sunshine. We can stop by my place and pick it up on the way to Ezra's."
Just then, Dr. Darnell came back with the cream. "Apply this at least twice daily. And make sure you get a good sunblock."
"Thank you." Trina smiled to the doctor.
"And if you're not better in a day, you need to head up to Tucson and get that examined."
"Yes, ma'am."
"She will," Ezra assured the doctor. "And thank you."
