What May Be

Part 5

by Ray-chan

"What does it mean, Quatre?"

Heero was curled up at the foot of the bed, arms folded behind his head as he stared into space. Quatre shivered as a distinct chill passed through him.

"I dont know, Heero," he shook his head sadly. "Im really not that good with deciphering dreams. Maybe, deep down inside, you WANT to believe that what Dr. J. was doing to you was for a good reason. That he was thinking of you and not just himself."

Heero sighed.

"Maybe. But still-"

"How are ya feeling?!" Duo bounced brightly into the room. Heero managed a small smile.

"Ive been better."

"Well," Duo plunked himself down on the bed beside the cobalt eyed boy, "I hope youre feeling up to a little moving around today. Sally heard what happened to you and thinks you should really go to her office and get checked out." He shrugged. "You know. Make sure theres no permanent damage."

Heero nodded slowly.

"II guess."

If at all possible, Duos expression brightened even more.

"Great! Ill go tell her. She wants you there by five o clockIf thats okay with you?"

"Thats fine."

"Okay! C-ya fellas later," and he left just as quickly as his goodbye was spoken. Heero sighed once again. Quatre noticed this slight gesture and frowned.

"Heero, you dont need to go today if you dont want to. Its still kinda soon for you to be-"

"Would you go with me?"

"Huh?" The suddenness of the question caught Quatre off guard.

Heero blushed.

"Would you go with me? II think Id feel a little better having you there."

"Of course Ill go."

Heeros expression brightened immediately.

"We should get going soon, though. Its almost three o clock."

The boys paused outside the massive building. Shielding their eyes from the setting sun, they gazed up at the enormity of the structure. Everything on Earth had grown larger after the fourth World War. Resources were once again in abundance and the colonies had been built since.

Sallys office was on the fifteenth floor. They would need to hurry to make Heeros appointment. Entering the building swiftly, the boys made their way to the elevator and selected their floor destination, feeling the thrumming of the small enclosure as it began to rise. Quatre turned to the boy next to him.

"Just relax, Heero. This shouldnt take too long."

*DING*

The doors sprang open to reveal Sally, already waiting there for them.

"So good to see you two," she beamed. "Come on, my office is right down the hall."

They followed her, recounting the story of Heeros "freedom" as they went. She shook her head sadly.

"How could anyone be so cruel? What Doctor J did itsits inhuman!"

Heero snorted.

"I think he lost what little humanity he had long before he met me."

They entered the small office in silence once again, Sally taking a seat at her desk and the two boys sitting together in the chairs set out before it. As always, Sally got right to the point.

"Heero," she turned to face the young Japanese pilot, "we need to do a series of tests. Noting too long. Just a physical and some questions mostly." She smiled reassuringly. "You should be out of here in no time."

Heero nodded.

"Lets get started then."

Quatre was there by Heeros side all through the physical, excusing himself only once to "run to the bathroom". Seeing Heero wearing nothing but a pair of navy blue boxers was having an interesting effect on certain parts of his anatomy. He forced himself to regain control and was extremely relieved when the tests were over and Heero dressed once again.

Seated together once again at Sallys desk, she eyed them warily before continuing.

"We just have one more test. Its more of a question answer session," she explained. "Just answer to the best of your ability."

Heero nodded, and she proceeded to reach for a small stack of papers on her desk.

"Okay. Now just answer honestly. Where were you born? "

"I dont know."

Sally noted this and wrote something on her sheet.

" When is your birthday? "

"I dont know."

She didnt even bother making any comments on the question sheet this time.

" Who are your parents? "

Heeros head drooped.

"I-I dont know."

Sally set the list of questions (all unanswered) aside and looked at Heero quizzically.

"You cant remember ANYTHING about your past before Doctor J?"

Tears began to form in the corners of Heeros eyes.

"I-I cant. I just cant. Im trying, I really am. I just" he trailed off in his anguish. Why couldnt he remember? Sally quickly leaned forward and placed a reassuring hand over Heeros.

"Its okay, Heero. Dont force it." She paused uncertainly. "How do you feel about hypnotism?"

Heeros head jerked up.

"Pardon?"

Sally held his gaze.

"Would you let me hypnotize you, Heero? You might be able to remember some of these things from your past."

Heero remained silent, weighing the possibility. Did he even WANT to remember? What of his past could be so painful that he would force it from his mind?

He swallowed down the lump forming on his throat.

"Okay. Lets do it."
