There is no need telling how Heero got home. That is a boring tail and what happened next is basically told in Endless Waltz but minus Duo. Years went by and finally Heero had enough courage to do what he had been avoiding all this time. It was painful and hard for him to face it but he did…
Heero slowly approached the graveyard. There were many dark and eerie tombstones filling the earth that it was depressing. Heero ignored them all. After he had walked to the very back and darkest area of the graveyard he spotted a VERY important tombstone and approached it. In his hands he held a dozen red roses and an expensive teddy bear with curls about its brown fur. He knelt down slowly and put the bear and the roses down on the bump of the grave. The Japanese boy gently and affectionately rubbed his thumb across the name engraved upon the tombstone.
"Duo Maxwell…" he whispered with a tint of love in his voice.
Heero came for a few reasons. First of all it was the third year that Duo had been dead and Heero was still alive. ((DUH!)) Second, Dr. Bradley told him to cherish every part of his loved ones that he still had. No matter what they or it really was. Heero didn't know Bay was REALLY telling him to go see Shinigami but she learned that the Japanese boy lacked common sense on a few topics. The third reason he came to the grave was well…he had never been there before. Now that the war was over and even the thing with Treize's daughter was over. Forth…well when you have been possessed by the same thing the guy you "loved" was don't you wonder just a little bit? And the fifth, and major reason he had come was to find out who he really loved…
The reason Heero hadn't visited the grave sooner was he couldn't find it in himself to forgive Duo for dying. For leaving him all alone in a house full of lovers and people he strongly disliked. Sure they were nice and all but they treated him like he was insane or something when Shinigami and Duo possessed him for a few months. On minute he would be frowning for a moment then the next he would glomp Trowa or Quatre and the moment after that he would have a sad look in his eyes that was filled with guilt and hundreds of years of knowledge.
Heero quickly took his thumb off the name on the tombstone and grabbed his head. After Shinigami had possessed him he had often gotten headaches and felt as though he was empty. Even when Duo was still there. Soon Duo had left him and said there was someone he wanted to visit. Heero guessed it was probably Sister Helen or something like that. Maybe even the still alive Hilde.
The pain in his head took over. He heard a high-pitched screeching sound and tears came into the ex-Wing pilot. The tears never fell though…he could tell when someone died because he got these headaches every second. The more painful they were the more painful the person had died. He couldn't help but wonder if this is how Shinigami felt whenever he took a life. The emptiness…the loneliness…the yearning inside begging for someone to be there with him.
Why was he thinking about Shinigami? How could he? After all he was the reason he felt pain. If he hadn't taken away Duo's life then he wouldn't have had to know about the secret and the truth. The painful truth that hurt so much. The very truth that haunted him. The one that wouldn't tell him who he loved…Duo or Shinigami?
Slowly the pain in his head left and was replaced by a mush lighter pain, but it still hurt a lot though. The old Wing Pilot moved back to the grave and rubbed his thumb against the words below the name.
"Loved by all who knew him (minus OZ and evil people.) His smile was loving and cheerful. And most of all he brought love everywhere he went." Heero said lowly. He hated what the tombstone read and said it was to…how to say it? 'Cheesy'. ((Karosai's Note: Heero said it in other words, which were much more offensive. And something about a stupid American wouldn't appreciate the 'lame thing' on his tomb stone.)) But Quatre insisted repeatedly that that was what it had to read and he wouldn't stand for anything else. Since Heero was in denial at the moment and Trowa had a gun in his hand he decided to just let it slide.
"Who did I love Duo…?" the Japanese boy asked slowly as to not mispronounce a single word.
Heero could imagine Duo jumping into his arms and saying happily, "Me of course." But that at the moment wasn't very helpful. He wasn't sure which Duo would have said this and it wasn't exactly helpful at the moment. So he tried to think of other things. Then again when the two guys share the same body and you couldn't tell who was who then how could you decide? He did feel that certain emptiness when Shinigami left his body. He felt like broken glass that had shattered upon the ground that no one had bothered to pick up.
What was his use now that the war was over? All he knew how to do was fight for the colonies and to…endure "physical pain" that Dr. J had contributed to. If he had no one to love…or be loved by he had no meaning. What other meaning did people have? He was pretty sure no one would notice if the ice cream man stayed away from the children or the clown seized scary the children. Or if Sesame Street was never shown on TV again. Or Barney for that matter.
Heero shook slightly as another headache took over his body. He felt a gentle sad hand touch his shoulder gently. 'Shinigami…you’re the one who told me to calm down that time. That’s when our bodies became one…you entered me. But now I feel so empty.' Heero said shaking.
'Heero's in pain…' Shinigami thought rapidly moving. He had to find Heero and find out why he was in pain. He could feel the others boys body in pain whenever he released a soul from their torment. But why had Heero felt the same pain as he did? No…not the same…Heero's pain was different. But the pains happened at the same time and hurt just the same. They must have understood the others pain. Finally he found where he needed to be. It was a graveyard and Shinigami was a little hurt when he noticed that the graveyard was the same one that Duo had been buried in.
'I feel him…' Heero whispered then continued, 'he's here with me…so close…I must find him and figure out what's happening. Maybe he knows what happened to Duo.' Heero couldn't force his muscles to move though. He had been frozen in place. The hand on his shoulder held him immobile and he couldn’t even struggle free.
'Don't move.' Shinigami spoke.
"Not this again. The pain of Hearing but not touching…" Heero whispered.
'I know the pain you feel…that pain you are experiencing when a life is taken from a body. But why do you feel it?' Shinigami asked in a sad voice.
"Why do you feel it?" Heero threw back.
'I don’t know. I am accustomed to the pain though unlike you. It doesn't hurt me as bad. But you seemed to be in much more pain then any one else would have felt. Are you so closely connected to the colonies and the people that live there that you feel it so strong when they die?' Shinigami questioned still holding Heero immobile.
Heero shook his head. "No. It happened after you and I became…well one I guess. The pain started then and when you left it continued."
'I thought I had hid the fact that I joined you. How did you know?' Shinigami asked ashamed that he had so poorly hid himself without knowing it.
"No I had no clue when you were in me. I had hints of Duo because well…I kissed Trowa on the cheek and that's just not right. The reason I knew that you were in me was because one day I felt something leave me and it hurt. It hurt so badly…I felt empty." Heero said in a monotone.
'Please forgive me…' begged the boy grasping Heero's shoulder tightly.
Heero nodded. "You weren't the one who bugged me…except when you left. It was Duo. He used my body to say goodbye to the others. You entered my body because…you wanted to protect me?"
Shinigami nodded. 'Indeed. I wanted to protect you from things you might do to yourself. After I saw your wrist and realized that Duo had let you do that to yourself. I was ashamed of him and had to help. But then I realized your thoughts and realized your pure hate for me. You blamed it all on me and I don't blame you.'
Heero winced. "No I only blamed things on you when I was being foolish…I realize now who I love…"
'Who?'
"You of course…the only thing who has ever loved me…but tell me…where's Duo?" Asked the young Japanese boy.
Shinigami sighed and his grip on Heero's shoulder loosened a little bit. Heero had just told him he loved him but he had also questioned about Duo. What a bother.
'Hilde died…' Shinigami replied. 'She was assassinated when they figured out she was the one who let Duo get away. So he went to her…'
Heero almost grinned and chuckled. "Good." Was his flat emotionless answer. Shinigami blinked. How was that good? "Now we can be left alone."
Death shook its head. 'You don't understand do you? The pain and the suffering that caring for me will cause you. You see we can never be together…you live and I just am.'
"Then kill me. Let me live with you in your world of death. Let me share the pain with you that you endure all day and night." Heero said standing up.
'But I can't kill that of which I love.' Shinigami said getting tearful.
"You should have killed me long ago then." Heero said flatly with a little hint of sadness.
'You…you saw me then?' Shinigami asked surprised that the boy had seen him before he showed upon him his true form.
"Yes. You were beautiful." Those words got Shinigami to turn red. "Well if you won't kill me then…join into my body. Become one with me so I can be complete once again." Heero begged.
'But I…'
"Please?" Heero asked. "I want to be more then a walking empty shell. I want to…I want to be with you. If I can't be with you then…" Heero quickly grabbed the gun out of his pocket and put it in his mouth and his finger on the trigger.
'NO!' Shinigami yelled as he twirled Heero to face him. There he saw the beautiful shimmering colbat blue eyes that he loved so much filled with tears and pain.
"…"
'I will become a child of the earth once again…' he said. But this time the body would be his. He curled into a ball and his braid wrapped around him beautifully. When he emerged he was a black haired boy with long beautiful hair. His complexion was pale and his eyes were still a shimmering violet.
"Your beautiful…" Heero whispered.
"No I'm naked." Shinigami answered.
"What are we going to call you?" Heero asked.
"Call me Gami." Shinigami said smiling.
"Wo ai ni Gami…" Heero whispered wrapping his arms around the boy.
"I love you Gami…" He replied.
Well after that there isn't much of a story to tell. Quatre was surprised the Heero had fallen for someone else so quickly. He didn't bother telling them about how Shinigami was possessing Duo and how Solo was Shinigami. They didn't want to confuse anyone and Heero thought that it would only make them angry with his dear Gami. So together alone they stayed. They sat in the room with silence and love in both their eyes…more so in Gami's then in Heero's. And they just grew old together never letting anyone know their little secret and holding all the past deep inside them.
