Cara is the main character in the Unicorn Chronicles books. We, as readers, generally don't know more than she does, but we don't always know all that she does. A good example of this is when she realizes who is hunting her in Grimwold's Cavern, yet the reader doesn't find out until they arrive in Firethroat's Lair.
Cara is very much the type of character Bruce Coville uses in his stories most of the time, she's a bit of a dreamer, a social outcast, and an innocent brought into fantastic circumstances. She is twelve years old, has brilliant red hair, that�s thick and curly, and pretty much just a regular kid. We know that before she came to Luster, she lived a nomadic lifestyle with her Grandmother, Ivy Morris, and believed her parents to be dead. In reality, Ivy stole her from her parents after she summoned a unicorn when she was ill. Cara has a little trouble dealing with what her grandmother did, but forgives her.
As our heroine, Cara is a bit of a paradox. Her grandmother, as a human, was a great ally of the unicorn, and later is reveled to be a unicorn transformed into a human for her protection. Yet as a born member of the Hunter clan, it�s expected of her to hate and hunt unicorns. Unicorns who know her will tell her they know she�s a friend, not a foe, but that doesn�t stop many unicorns from looking surprised when they first hear her name. |
