Learn different applications of Dine dyes on different fibers and skins;  Learn to wash, card and spin wool into yarn; Pick and identify plants for dyeing; Learn about mordants; Learn about plant preparation; Dye many colors of yarn using Dine techniques; Learn about the conservation of plants;  Keep samples of dyed fiber and recipe;

"Dine Weaving for K-12 Students"
Learn about the origins of weaving among the Dine.  Talk about the history of Navajo weaving.  Talk about the eight steps of Navajo weaving.  Talk about the introduction of sheep into the Navajo society.  Talk about Dine Dyes and their origins.  No Kool-Aid, onion skins, batteries, etc...  Only local plants, local minerals, plain water, pots/pans and grandma's teachings are used.

Mark H. Deschinny demonstrates the many dye techniques Dine have passed onto generation to generation.  Learn about the development of dyes among the Dine.  Learn about the evolution of dye tools used by the Dine from pre-European to present day.  Learn about the different plants, minerals and materials used.  Learn different applications of Dine dyes on different fibers and skins;  Learn about mordant dyes; Learn about plant preparation; Dye many colors of yarn using Dine techniques; Mr. Deschinny stresses traditional values throughout the demonstration and encourages participation such as washing, carding, grinding, stirring and rinsing.  All dyes presented are safe for children.
