The Dine Dye Chart was invented by the late Mabel Burnside-Myers, a famous master weaver, in the 1950's.  With her children Melvin, Isabel, Wilbur, Vera Myers and James Myers, Jr., Mabel taught her children how to dye yarn and how to make the internationally known "Dye Chart".  The dye chart shows the many different and distinct hues and colors a traditional Dine weaver can achieve with wool using only plants, minerals, pots and water.

The Dine Dyeing is an ancient and natural process using only local plants, local minerals, pots and water.  Isabel uses plants native to the Dine Southwest.  She uses a variety of minerals such as red hematite, yellow ochre, clay, natural salt, gypsum and alum.  She primarly uses enamel pans, but she uses aluminum, copper and tin pots in her dyeing.  She uses snow water, rain water and Oak Springs tap water for her dyes.  A rare group of Dine weavers use Dine Dyeing techniques as Isabel.

It is the Dine Dye Chart that displays the Dine Way of obtaining colors for traditional Dine weavings.  In the middle of the chart is a traditional hand-woven weaving in a loom.  Each weaving was traditionally warped and woven.  The weaving is made of the Dine dyed yarns.  Strands of the yarn are pulled to their respected plant(s) and/or minerals from which it was dyed.  The plants are displayed on 100% virgin wool with labels.

Each of
Isabel's Dine Dye Charts are unique, since each weaving design is different and the selection of plants is different.  The plant selection is based on Isabel's ideal colors for the design of her weaving.  Using a combination of plant selection and yarn selection, the Dine Dye Chart becomes more than a chart of dyes but a mastering of plant and color composition.  It is Isabel Myers-Deschinny's mastering of Dine Dyeing that makes her Dine Dye Charts cherished around the world.
