Constantia De Ruyver
(1837 - 1904)

As written in the chapter about Pieter Joseph De Ruyver (1787-1853), he and his wife, Natalie Troncquo, got 5 children in Zegelsem, of which one died as a child. The four other children married and got children of their own. Here below, an overview of the descendants of these four children is given on the basis of a study done in 1985. In that year, a family reunion of all these descendants was held in the village of Nederbrakel, part of the Municipality of Brakel. The situation described here below is the situation of the descendants in 1985 (1).

Constantia was born in Zegelsem on August 27, 1837 at midnight (2). Constantia married Franciscus De Backer in Zegelsem on January 7, 1869 at 4 p.m. (3). Franciscus was the son of Louis De Backer (agricultural worker) and Sophie Jourez (without profession). He was born on April 17, 1836, in Sint-Maria-Horebeke, but spent the years of his youth in Zegelsem. Official documents record Franciscus De Backer as being agricultural worker and weaver, while his bride Constantia De Ruyver is mentioned as lace-worker. Constantia died on June 6, 1904, in Zegelsem, while her husband Franciscus died on September 28, 1917, in Nederbrakel (4).

Franciscus De Backer and Constantia De Ruyver got 6 children in Zegelsem:

Lisa De Backer was born on September 7, 1871. She married Victor Capiau on May 25, 1899, in Zegelsem. Victor was also born in Zegelsem on August 19, 1866. Six sons and two daughters were born from their marriage. Five of Victor's and Lisa's children got descendants; two children married but died without children; and one daughter (Madeleine) died as a Catholic nun in the village of Deftinge (now part of the Municipality of Lierde). Lisa De Backer and Victor Capiau died in Zegelsem, respectively on June 6, 1947, and December 24, 1955. In 1985, Lisa and Victor had 20 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren (early deceased children and persons already deceased in 1985 included).

Sidonie De Backer was born on September 17, 1872, and married Sebastianus Rasschaert on November 9, 1892, in Zegelsem. Sebastianus was the son of Pieter Joseph Rasschaert and Blondine De Bruyne. He was born on January 19, 1867, in Elst, and is mentioned by official documents as having been weaver and barber. His wife Sidonie De Backer was recorded as weaver. Sidonie and Sebastianus got 5 sons and 5 daughters. One son died early, two were killed in the war, and two married but didn't get any children. Only the five daughters got descendants. Sebastianus Rasschaert passed away on January 23, 1940, in Nederbrakel. Sidonie De Backer died on November 29, 1943, also in Nederbrakel. By 1985, they got 29 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Elodie De Backer was born on May 14, 1874, and married Joseph D'Haese, who was born in Zegelsem, too, on March 19, 1877. On August 11, 1912, a son, called Frans, was born in Nederbrakel. Due to gangrene, Frans D'Haese died on October 12, 1931, in Oudenaarde. Joseph D'Haese and Elodie De Backer died both in Nederbrakel respectively on May 20, 1948 and August 8, 1958, without any descendants. Victor De Backer was born on September 10, 1879. He married Leonie Van Yperzele. 5 sons and 2 daughters were born from this marriage. 3 sons died as babies. One son married but remained childless. The remaining 1 son and 2 daughters got descendants. Victor De Backer died on September 29, 1945, in Opbrakel. By 1985, he had 8 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Leonie De Backer was born on September 7, 1881. She became a Catholic nun in the convent of Deftinge (now part of Lierde), where she passed away on March 9, 1906.

Maria Adolphina De Backer was born on June 23, 1884. She, too, became a Catholic nun in the convent of Deftinge. She died on July 9, 1942, in Temse.
