| Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, The Colosseum and San Pietro in Vincoli. | ||||||||||||
| *** The Roman Forum is reached by Colosseo station of line B of the Metro. I took a guided tour of the Forum which was very good and not expensive ( the tour is taken on the left of the entrance to the Forum by the Arc of Titus at 10:30, and the Palatine hill tour begins at 12:00 at the same place). The Forum was the center of ancient Rome. The religious, and later military parades took place from east to west along the Via Sacra - under the various arches along the road (of which three remained). The first is the Arch of Titus - built in 81 to commemorate the burning of the Temple in Jerusalem. A relief of the Menorah can be seen on it. The Jews of Rome never passed under this arch, until after the creation of the State of Israel - following which the Jews of Rome marched under the arch - but in the opposite direction - from west to east. |
