Day 1 - Monday - 25/10/04:
The Roman Triangle: Piazza di Spagna, Piazza del Popolo, the Pantheon, and Piazza Navona.
Following arrival at Leonardo de Vinci airport (known as Fiumicino) I took the express train to Termini station - the main train station of Rome.
As I arrived in Temini around 11:00 AM I decided to leave all the luggage in the luggage keeping of the station - that is until I saw the line of tourists waiting there.
The line must be at least an hour long (and my visit to Rome was not in season).
Instead I went straight to my Hotel, which was very nice and agreed to give me the room three hours before the check in time.

The hotel was right next to the fabulous and always crowded ***Trevi fountain. It is said that if you through a coin into the fountain you will return to Rome.

This fountain was completed in 1762, and in the center there is a great statue of Neptune, with two smaller Neptunes or Tritons on the side - one symbolizing the calm sea (by holding a calm horse) and the other the rough sea (by holding an unruly horse). The fountain is named after a young virgin named Trivia who shoed the thirsty Roman soldiers a fountain (which was later connected to an aqueduct bringing the water to this place. The relief on the upper right shows her and the soldiers.

From the Trevi fountain I walked west to the Piazza Colonna (in which stands the Column of Marcus Aurelius - not to be confused with Tarajan's Column - a colomn erected after Marcus Aurelius' death in 180 AD).
