Paul Anthony McDermott was born in Adelaide on May 13th, 1962 to John and Betty McDermott.  He has five siblings including his non-identical twin sister Sharon.  Paul and Sharon were born on Mothers Day and were featured in the newspaper as "Babies of the Day".  The family moved to Canberra when Paul was younger and that is where he grew up.

After high school Paul was a student at the Canberra School of Art.  At the time he was struggling to afford to buy art canvas, so when he was offered the chance to join a comedy group he took the opportunity.  Joining with Tim Ferguson and Richard Fidler, the Doug Anthony Allstars were born.  DAAS performed together for about eight years, before calling it quits in 1994.

Paul disappeared from the public eye for a while after the Dougs split up.  In 1995 he appeared at the Melbourne Comedy Festival in a debate called "Money Is The Root Of All Evil".  In 1996 he wrote and performed his own stage show called "Mosh" which received mixed reviews.  He was then approached by Ted Robinson to front a new show on the ABC called "Good News Week".  Paul cut off the dreadlocks he was still sporting and took on the job.

In 1999 Good News Week moved to Channel Ten, and a second show called "GNW Night Lite" was screened.  In 2000 they reverted back to one show  word has it that the show will not return in it's current format in 2001.  Hopefully we will continue to see Paul on our television screens in some form.

A few interesting facts about Paul .. he is red/green colour blind, he loves a hot cup of tea, he smokes and apparently loves cherry ripes.  Paul currently resides at Bondi in Sydney, NSW.
