THE NEW STREET CLIQUE

Coming this month to a theater near you, Where the Day Takes You will rock Pretty Woman into reality. YM talked to some of the members of this young star-studded cast and asked them how they prepared themselves to play real runaway teenagers battling to survive drugs, prostituion and homelessness on the streets of Hollywood. Here's what they said: Dermot Mulroney, 29

Resume: Starred as John Deacon in the AIDS tearjerker Longtime Companion, appeared in Young Guns, Staying Together and Career Opportunities.

His Role: King, the father figure to a gang of runaways.

How he researched it: Worked with the Los Angeles Youth Network and Covenant House. "My eyes were really opened to the problem. Teenage runaways are really an invisble culture - they're hard to spot."

His advice to you: "Finish your education. No matter how bad things seem, my advice to all kids is, don't drop out of high school."

Coping with personal tough times: "I ran away once when I was 17.... You have to really try to keep the conversation going back and forth. Fighting it out or running away is a desperation tactic. But sometimes living on the streets is better than the abuse these kids get at home."
