Interview, May 1990

A small photo of Dermot and Kieran is also in this issue,
which can be seen at Rebecca's Tidbits.

BROTHER ACT PLAYS HOLLYWOOD

Kieran Mulroney, twenty-four and Dermot Mulroney, twenty-six, don't look like brothers. Kieran, the fair-haired one, will be seen in this months's HBO drama By Dawn's Early Light. Dermot, the darker one, has a brief but very touching role in this May's feature release Longtime Companion and the release in the upcoming film Bright Angel, based on two Richard Ford stories. The Mulroneys' earnest yet upbeat talents area pleasant surprise in Hollywood. We met at one of the many Ship's in Los Angeles, an erstwhile IHOP, where the brothers filled me in.

Interview:You're both in Career Opportunities, the John Hughes production that's supposed to open this summer.
DM: Yes. There's only the first rough cut of it now.
KM: It's about three and a half hours long.
DM: [laughs] So we may not end up in the movie.
I: Is that the first time you've worked together?
KM: Professionally, yes.
DM: We did a bunch of plays when we were kids in high school, too. In Career Opportuineis we're a couple of utter goofalls, just fumbling bad guys. Your patiently comic duo.
I: Dermot, you're the older brother?
DM: Two years older.
I: Will you be doing a family saga together?
DM: Well, somebody's gonna sucker us into it eventually. We'll have to so succumb to the pressure of somebody sometime, but it hasn't happened yet.
KM: I wish we could get beyond the coming-of-age story. I think if we did a family thing it should be a historical biography.
DM: They already made that movie about the Grimm brothers.
KM: Did they?
DM Yeah. So that's out.
KM: Unless we do a remake.
DM: Who else is there?
KM: Well, you had said the Wright brothers.
DM: That's too easy.
KM: The Dorsey Brothers.
DM: The Dorsey Brothers?
KM: There was Tommy Dorsey and - what's the other guy's name?
DM: You get to play him, the one that nobody knows.
KM: I was thinking maybe we could play the Quaids, do the Quaid biography.
I: Randy and Dennis. Who'll play which brother?
KM: That would be a tough one.
DM: I'd have to get a bigger chest and you'd have to get taller.
