Lava is still flowing from the Pu'u Pu'u vent, within easy walking distance of the road.  Well, okay - OVER the road, and quite recently.
This flow occurred February 22, 2003.
This sign is visible at the left side of picture to left.
Yes, you can go as close as you want - or dare - to the flowing lava.
Lava this color is about 1200 degrees Fahrenheit, or 650 C.
I originally tossed this stick thinking it would sink into the flowing lava like into a liquid, but it bounced off as if from rock.  Eventually the lava changed direction and flowed over it, filling the area as below and below right. Right as this picture was being taken, the rocks about 15' to my right started to pop, a sign that lava was flowing into or under them.
This lava flow looks like Oreo cookie crumbs from a distance
