:: Phantasy Star Online for GCN Review |
Overview-
Phantasy Star Online (or PSO for short) is game which is known as a RPG/Adventure game which can be played online or offline. About 30% of the game is offline, which is good if you can’t afford the internet and the monthly fee. Offline mode is just basically killing monsters and getting upgrades. But there is a good feature to play with four of your friends. Online mode is the full game experience. Online mode is fun because you get to play with many people and team up to beat the game and there are more quests, events, and you meet nice people to play with. Online mode will keep you busy for months to come. So if you got the money I highly recommend to buy the internet and monthly fee of about 10 bucks(which is about what every online pay per play game charges) This game also was a mod of the DC version which added a whole new story to it. There are also three different modes to choose from. Challenge mode, you team up with four people with fixed stats and items and go through levels. If you beat all these levels in a certain time, you’ll receive a special surprise. There is also battle mode. This is pretty much self explanatory. Get your character and kill other people.
The story of the game is that it is set in the future and the humans home planet(not earth its too futuristic for earth to be still alive)is dieing and they need a new home. But with their satellites they found a new planet. They sent out a ship full of thousands of people called Pioneer one to the planet. After when they got to the perfect new home they contacted the humans home planet to bring another ship called Pioneer 2. When Pioneer 2 arrived, both of the ships sent out a signal to make sure all was good…but it wasn’t. Moments after the signal was sent, a huge explosion happened that killed thousands of people on Pioneer 1. Pioneer two sent out a group called the HUNTERS to go examine the accident to see if there are survivors. Also The General of the HUNTERS also has a daughter that was on Pioneer 1 is missing and that is basically the idea. Find survivors of the explosion.
The Story of Episode 2 is as follows. The Legendary Hero Flowen, has gone missing and there have been monsters on this island called Gal De Val. But before the HUNTERS can go to the island, they have to go through a HUNTERS test to see if they are qualified. But on the island there is history of the island and this Monster called DARK FLOW. The scientists believe that DARK FLOW was the cause of the monsters and if the monster dies, there is hope that all the monsters will be killed and the planet will be saved.
Now that I’m done with the story, I’ll tell you about what there is on PSO. In PSO you get to choose which character you are. There are 3 different types of characters, Hunter, Ranger, and Force each with 4 different types of people to choose from with unique abilities. Hunter is basically the fighting guy. He is the best with swords and can use most offensive techniques and healing spells. He has the highest attack, but low accuracy. He is the best for newbie players. Ranger is the shooting guy. He is the best rifles and handguns (duh) and has the best accuracy out of all players but low attack. Like Hunter, he has some offensive spells but he has Defensive spells and he can also heal. He is recommended for non-newbie players. Then there is Force, The spell caster. He sucks with all kinds of weapons and can only use rods and wands. But the upside of this character is that he has all the spells in the book and the spell level can go up to level 30(which is really good) The spells forces get are also very AWESOME! But force has all down sides on stats(except mind) he is very weak and has no health and no defense. This guy is recommended for experts(like me ^^)
Another nice addition to this game is this little robot friend called a MAG. The MAG is a little robot friend that goes on your shoulder and helps you with raising your stats and giving you a special attack called a photon blast! Photon blasts are summons that are very powerful which is very helpful in a sticky situation. Also the MAG also increases stats. The way it works that you give it an item and there are power bars for each stat. When these bars fill up the stat levels up and your stat levels up to. Also when your MAG evolves, it gets a new photon blast and a new look (ooooh shiny)
Final Rating-
Here’s how I rate games,
^^= couldn’t be any better. Perfect in every way.
:D = Excellent! there are little down sides.
:) = alright. Makes me smile but not really happy
:\ = eh…not really great…Actually crappy.
:( = This makes poop look good.
Graphics- Graphics are awesome. The scenery is beautiful. There is this one level that will make you say wow. Also the characters look perfect and the fighting is not choppy at all. Rating: ^^
Sound- The sounds excellent. The music is great in most levels (some are really lame :S) but the monsters and swords and guns sound really good. Other then that the music was awesome in some levels but others were not great. Rating: :D
Control- Control is great. Its not confusing and you can also set you’re techniques for quick use. But there are down sides, when you want to talk, there is no keyboard and you have to buy one. Rating: :)
Story- I liked it. Its not a great story if you have offline. But with online you get a more complete story line and more twist to it. Rating: :D
Overall- This game is awesome. I highly recommend it for all RPG fans. This game will keep you entertained for months to come. Rating: ^^
