Meredith's Vocabulary Corner
July 2004 - February 2005
Vocabulary Note:
In February and March of 2005, right at the 18 mos. mark, Meredith's vocabulary has taken off.  She does an immeasurable amount of mimicking.  Many of the words she mimicks are indeed sticking and becoming part of her daily use.  As of mid-March, her parents estimate she is approaching 40 words and growing fast.  The below "Vocabulary Corner" will no longer be regularly updated and exists as a historical accounting of her early vocab development.
1.. Mama (mah-mah) - July 2004 For mom and all things mom
2. Dada (da-da) - July 2004 For dad and all things dad
3. Ball (bah) - Aug 2004

(nu-nu-nu-nu-nu) - Aug 2004 Often said calmly but accompanied with a vigorous head-shake

(hiee) Aug 2004
6. More
(moh) - Sept 2004 For more food or drink
7. Elmo (e-MOH) Oct 2004 First differentiated two-syllable word
8. Baby (bu-bu) Oct 2004
9. Duck (duhk) Oct 2004
10. Ya (ye-a) Nov 2004  For 'yes' or 'I want to continue doing this."
11. Grandma (gra-MA) Nov 2004
12. Grandpa (grep-pa) Nov 2004  At least her that's what her grandparents insist!
13. All done (ah-dun) Dec 2004  Used when she's done with her meal or ready to get out of the car.
14.  Up (up) Dec 2004 Used mostly for going up the stairs.  Sometimes she'll say "uh-p g-dun" for "Up, Down" when she's scaling the stairs.
15. Fish (ish) Dec 2004
16. Uh-oh (UH-uh) Jan 2005 Learned at daycare.  Used when she or someone else drops something or makes a mistake.
17. Ouch (awoo) Jan 2005
18. Down (dun) Jan 2005 Usually used with "up".  She goes up on her tip-toes and then crouches down while saying "Up, Down.".
19. Banana (nana) Jan 2005
20. Nose (noze) Jan 2005  Likes to point to her mom's and dad's noses.
21. Daycare (dah-kah) Feb 2005 Says it excitedly when her dad dropes her off at the daycare.  (She has lots of fun there.)

27. Mine (mahn!) Feb 2005  Used in the same way all toddlers use it.
28. Roll (wrl-l) Feb 2005  Said when she's pushing toys with wheels or green peas on her high chair.
          MADE-UP VOCABULARY

Meredith has a lot of words only she understands.  Sometimes her parents can decipher their meaning.

1. "Bah" or "Dah" - Uses: that, there, look, car, truck, bus, hey, yes  Is usually accompanied by pointing
2. "Ee-ee-ee!" as a high-pitched screech - Uses: cat, meow
3. "Oh-oh-oh" - Uses: to refer to something that is really fun or exciting, e.g. a barking dog
4. "Ee-ee-oh-oh-oh" - Uses: imitating the monkey she saw at the zoo, as well as her grandma's impression of the monkey at the zoo
5. "Whee!" - Uses: usually said when she goes down the slide
6. "Ooooooh!" - Uses: imitating a cow's "moo"
7.  "Vrrrrrrf..." - Uses: imitate a truck or car moving
8.  "Brrrlll" - Uses: "wow!" or "neat!"
