I’m not sure about this - two things - I’m not sure I was ever sane around food, so I don’t see what "restored" in that sense actually means - and then - why should God bother with me and my minor problems?

OK, reasonable concerns - would you mind if I referred to a "Higher Power" rather than use the word God - at the moment anyway?

Well, in the Big Book, and in our OA literature, we are told that we can choose our own conception of a Higher Power - one that is personal to us. When you say that "God" would not bother with you - why would you think that is?

I guess my concept of God - of a Higher Power - is somewhat fuzzy, but it’s all about a severe and harsh person - he has all the world to look after, and isn’t making that good a job of it - so how the heck would he have time to worry about me?

Well yes, I can see that if that was my HP, then that wouldn’t work too well for me. But here is what I did when I was new in OA, I wrote a job description for a HP that would work for me - do you think you could do that? Write down a description of what your perfect HP would be? One that could help you?

Ok dear Sponsor, I’ve done that "job description" thing you suggested. It took a while, but in the end I decided that what I really needed in my HP was one that loved me unconditionally, accepted me unconditionally, wanted the best for me, but wouldn’t push a solution on me - would let me try to sort it out myself, but would help when I asked. A kind of loving and kind parent, who wanted to look after me.

I cannot think of a better one for you - you may refine this as you go along in recovery, as you grow spiritually, but this HP sounds much better than the harsh unforgiving one you mentioned before. So - as this is your Higher Power - would he/she/it help you with your food? Could they help you find sanity?

Yes! MY HP is a kind of loving parent, and so would know what "Sanity" around food was for me, even when I didn’t - all I would need to do would be to ask, and HP would show me what it meant. Oh I see! HP would restore me to the sanity that HP made for me. If I asked for help, HP would help me make right choices and stop my crappy thinking.

So, is this the HP that you need - one that could restore you to sanity?

Yes!!!! I know that I am not able to do this - but the HP I just described can:) and will if I ask:)
