These two 19th century structures lie on the southwest end of the plaza. To the left is the Castro-Breen Adobe, to the right the Plaza Hotel, which was originally a single storey, adobe soldiers' barracks, built in 1813. It was purchased in 1858 by Angelo Zanetta, a restaurantuer & hotelier, who had already established a reputation for fine service in New Orleans & Monterey. Zanetta added the wooden balcony & 2nd storey. The establishment, known for its fine bar & food, was one of the favorite stops on the Coast Line Stage route.
