Adopting a cat
If you would like to adopt a cat or kitten from the Dereham
Branch Shelter here's what to do.
First of all, if you do not live in Dereham & District; then you can
find the details of your nearest Cats Protection Shelter on the HQ Shelter page.
Alternatively if your postcode is not covered by one of our Shelters,
telephone the HQ Helpline on 01403 221919 to get details of your nearest
voluntary Branch, or contact HQ by
email stating your town, county and postcode. A number of other
Branches also have their own web sites which can be located from the Branches section of Cats
Online.
- Phone Karen or Sue at the shelter between 11am and
3pm any day of the week.
- We will invite you to visit the shelter to take a look at us and
cats/kittens in our care. You will not be allowed to take a cat/kitten
away on your first visit.
If you find a suitable cat then he/she will be
reserved for you subject to a satisfactory completion of a home visit by a
member of our team.
Please note that a home visit is an integral part of our
homing procedures, so don't be alarmed or offended.
- When the home visit has been completed you will be
asked to ring the shelter and arrange an appointment to collect you
cat/kitten. You will be asked to sign a simple adoption form before taking
your cat home with you. Please remember to bring a suitable carrier to take
your cat/kitten home in.
- All of our adult cats are neutered prior to rehoming.
If you are adopting a kitten you will need to sign to say you agree to have
the kitten neutered at the appropriate age.
- Before you leave the shelter, don't forget to give a
donation. We don't charge for our cats, but it costs a minimum of 25 a month
to look after each one and often we have had to pay for neutering and
treatment too.
- All cats/kittens leaving the shelter will be flead and wormed, will have had
a veterinary health check and treatment where appropriate. They will also
be started with their initial course of vaccination, this will need to be completed/continued
at your local vet as required.
