TIPPER GORE

Ah, Tipper Gore. Where to start? This woman strikes me as one of the strongest opponents to free speech in America. In fact, she is the one to blame for the censored Reel Big Fish album I bought from Wal*Mart. She is one of the founding members of the PMRC, the Parents Music Resource Center, a diabolical right-wing organization determined to mis-inform parents about popular music until there is no freedom of music. She is the one who forced record companies to put those Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics stickers on everything. Wal*Mart doesn't like having those stickers, so they sell censored tapes, not requiring the stickers.

Tipper Gore is the author of the book Raising PG Kids in an X-Rated World. This book ranges from telling parents that Rock music will make your child a murderer, to telling them that Dungeons and Dragons will turn them into Satan worshippers. I'd like to talk about this D&D thing. I never understood exactly what it is that opponents of Dungeons and Dragons were so hot and bothered about. I like to think about the game like this: Do you remember playing pretend as a kid? It's just the same, only with rules and dice. Anti-D&D people seem to have three big arguments: 1)D&D is Satanic, 2)Deaths are linked to D&D, 3)People playing the game lose touch with reality. I'm going to take this point-by-point.
