Programs for Children with Disabilities

States are required to provide special education programs for children aged 3 to 5 years. The State of Colorado sponsors programs for infants and toddlers as well.

There are no special licensing regulations applicable to child care providers for children with disabilities.

Think about your child's and family's specific special needs foremost, and what type of program may best meet these needs. Talk with your pediatrician about the types of care you are looking into for your child. Decide on any specific training requirements you may need in a provider. The care you choose may turn out to be care provided inside or outside of your home.

Be sure to allow yourself ample time to visit and screen programs and individual providers.

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act , family child care homes must accept applications from all families, regardless of the child's needs. They must attempt to include any child unless it would be a financial hardship, or would require them to change their program significantly. Programs that are run by religious organizations do not have to comply with the ADA, but may be subject to state anti- discrimination laws.
