Dentman- Who Are you? Kevin- I am Kevin AKA Citizen Roadbeer although no one ever uses the names from the 7" so you can call me Kevin Dent. Dentman- What did you do in the band? Kevin- I yelled, screamed, sang, pleaded, bled, did cool poses, sometimes writhed around on the floor, and usually tried to get people to dance. I did it all except cool hardcore guy jumps, but that's because I'm too fat and also, I'm not a cool hardcore guy. Dentman- How did you become a member of The Dents? Kevin- I'd been friends with Pat Dent ever since like 3rd grade or something. When I first got into punk Pat was into other shit so we didn't see each other that much. I had this band with Pat Welch and Fat Josh called Malfunction (later called the Heartattacks), which was pretty funny. We were your typical kid punk band. That broke up after about a year. Around then dear old Pat Dent (he wasn't called that back then) was telling me about this kid Rob (who I only kinda knew) that showed him all this punk shit and how they were starting a band. A little later they asked me to join for some reason. Maybe because we were friends, maybe because the kid Chris that was in the band was the single most destructive person you could bring to your parents house, who knows! But anyway, they did so I said yes, which made me a member. Dentman- What was your favorite moment in the band? Kevin- I don't know if I can narrow it down to one. The whole tour was pretty dope, but I don't think that's a single moment or my favorite. I don't even remember the exact show or month or year, or anything, but I remember the feeling. The feeling I got when people started to really get into it. Like the first time I had a couple people sing the words into the mic with me was fucking rad. Just watching people run around dancing and shouting our words was so cool. I love that moment and goddammit I miss it. Putting a record out was pretty cool, too. Dentman- How did you fell when the band broke up? Kevin- I felt shitty. I loved our band, even the stupider songs. I had just finished 2 years at college and I was gonna take off, have a stupid job and focus all of my attention on the Dents. I really feel like we had something going. Our shit was accepted pretty fuckin well and if we could have done a real, full tour I think things would have started to get better and better for us. Every place we sent the record thought it was pretty good (except Heartattack but what the fuck do they know? The only worthwhile thing in their zine is Felix Havoc's column and he probably would have liked it.) And if they could have seen us play a good live show -- fuck! Oh well it never happened. So I was pretty pissed and let down, but it was up to Pat Dent and I understand his reasoning. I still feel shitty about it breaking up. The only thing I ever wanted to do with my life is play in a band and I think the death of the Dents is a lot of work and potential down the drain. Plus, not to be bigheaded, but I think it sucks for Rotchester's scene too. Especially with The End on rocky waters, but people in other cities didn't like The End, which affected how they thought of Rochester as a whole. They did like us, which combated that. Now we need a new big local band to do even better -- to stay totally punk (musically and mentally) and to kick our scene, and our shitty country's scene in the balls. Fuck it -- the world too. Then all the smaller Rochester bands can kick the world while it's down and together we will rule! Ha ha ha ha ha!!! Dentman- Do you have any other bands? Kevin- Other bands? Well, let's see. Me and Fatty Josh have some recordings floating around that we made with a couple friends called The Ultimate Randy. You heard the Blake Guyers tape, right? It's beyond that. We're way drunker and way more fucked up in many ways. You gotta here me and Josh's rap song. I'm in the middle of making a best of the two Ultimate Randy tapes that are out and making millions off it. Well, no one will buy it, but those in the know will think it is genius. I tried to start a new punk band, but we only practiced enough to kind of get "Cop Killer" down and then it broke. Oh well, I'll be back someday. I've got nothing better to do. I still ruin things with SATMAP once in a while, but only if I'm really drunk. Do you think The Dents will ever get back together? Kevin- When I first started doing this interview I was going to say we're supposed to and really hope we do, but I got a call in the middle of this that tells me the chances are very good. I we all keep our fingers crossed... Dentman- Who was the biggest pain in the ass in the band? Kevin- Well, let's see. No one was perfect. Rob would never hang out with us so that was crappy, but that doesn't make him a pain in the ass. Josh never quite got all the songs down or as into it as we needed him to be. Also he never had any money. Pat "Paddy" Welch - well he was just a bastard. I probably did some things wrong -- ask Pat Dent about that. Pat Dent would sometimes get pissed a little too easy, but I think we needed it. I love us all, though. Dentman- What was your favorite song? Kevin- The Old Routine is really cool. Sometimes I'll get this weird feeling singing that song. I can't describe it, but it's dope. Plus the crowd seems to love this song and the part at the end when me and Dent are both screaming -- intense. Far Too Long is also a really cool song that w played a few times, but hopefully will be out on vinyl sometime soon. It tells everyone what we are and that we will never change. DENT-4-LIFE! Dentman- What do you want to say to all your fans out there? Kevin- I didn't know I had fans. You are my friends and comrades. Even if we never got to talk at shows you are my friends for being there. Come talk to me next time you see me. And if you're still around since e've last played I want to tell you thanks for still being here. I've seen so many kids go in and out of the Rochester scene so fast. It's fucking terrible. Our crap-ass city seems to do that to kids, but you who have stuck around are special. Never leave punk, it's too important, especially now when we've got all these fucks on MTV making the world think punk is nice and hip. You know that punk is so much more than that and never forget it. Thank you for all the good times and raise your bottle (wine or sparkling grape juice if you're straight edge) in a toast to Rochester punk past, present, and future! One more thing. There is an asshole in our scene who thinks punk is about looking cool and apparently hitting and attempting to rape girls. Ask around at shows and you be able to find out who this scumbag is. This type of behavior cannot be accepted in our scene. No one has the right to touch our beautiful punk rock girls like that, especially someone in the guise of punk. Let him know that we don't want shit like him in our scene! All of you take care and I hope to see you soon. You can reach me at [email protected] |
