The type and brand of toothpaste you use is a personal choice and depends mainly on your oral health needs. Below are some points to think about when choosing a toothpaste that best suits you...
Tartar Control: This is helpful for those of us who seem to have heavy tartar/calculus build up. You should also know that many "anti-tartar" toothpastes contain phosphates, an ingredient shown to cause gum irritation and inflammation in some individuals. If you experience any irritation, or sloughing of tissue, discontinue use and seek the advice of your oral health professional.
Fluoride: Clinical studies demonstrate that fluoride has anti-microbial and anti-tooth decay properties. This is a good thing! Make sure that when using a toothpaste with fluoride on a child, use a pea-sized amount on the toothbrush. Also, if you are using a "gum care" toothpaste, it contains stannous fluoride that can stain your teeth and fillings if used for an extended amount of time.
Taste: There are a variety of flavored toothpastes' on the market, especially the ones designed for children. Word to the wise: Cinnamon is the number one oral allergy. If you are using any oral health products that are cinnamon flavored and experience a burning sensation, you may have a cinnamon allergy!
Whitening: Toothpastes' that focus on whitening help remove stains. Some stains, however, may not be removed with over the counter whitening toothpastes'. Be wary of a whitening toothpaste that has a high acid content. Acid in toothpaste is a concern of the FDA and negates any hygiene benefits. Also note that some "tooth colored" fillings will discolor with age, and whitening toothpastes' may not have any affect on them.
