Sealants
A sealant is a plastic material that is usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and premolars).  It is bonded on the tooth without pain and acts as the "extra layer" for protecting enamel from plaque acids.

4 out of 5 children under age 15 develope decay on the chewing surfaces of their back teeth.  It is a good idea to have the sealant placed on your child's teeth as soon as the first permanent tooth erupts.

Check with you dental professional for an evaluation to see when your child is ready for sealants and to check efficacy of the ones that are already there!  Remember, sealants aren't just for children!  Ask your dental hygienist if sealants should be incorporated into your dental hygiene plan also!
This is a picture of a sealant.  The sealant material is the whitest area on the top of the tooth.
