| 2004-2005 WISCONSIN STATE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT Defending Champ - Hudson. Favorites - Superior, Wisconsin Rapids, Arrowhead. Quarterfinals: 3/3/2005 Hartland Arrowhead (20-3-1) shutout Fond du Lac (17-6-1) 5-0. Arrowhead took control from the beginning, outshooting Fond du Lac 12-2 in the first period and notching a goal for a 1-0 lead. The Warhawks blew the game open with four goals in the first half of the second period for a comfortable 5-0 cushion. Sophomore goalie Alex Koeppen of Arrowhead recorded the shutout; the fifth straight shutout for the Warhawks. Arrowhead outshot Fond du Lac 31-11. For Arrowhead, junior forward Travis Hetzel had 2 goals, 1 assist, senior forward Andy Ellis had 3 assists, and senior forward Myles Miller had 2 goals. Goalies: Arrowhead - Koeppen, Fond du Lac - sophomore Randy Willis. Janesville Parker/Craig (14-9-2, Section 6) upset Milwaukee University School (17-7-0, Section 8) 2-1 in overtime. Janesville led 1-0 after one period on a power play goal from sophomore forward Daniel Olszewski in the final minute of the period, at 14:42. In the second period, Milwaukee University School tied the game, 1-1, when senior forward Eric Meyer tallied at 8:03. The Wildcats carried the play in the third period, outshooting Janesville 15-7; but, neither team could score as junior goalie Max Giese of the Bluebirds made some good saves. The overtime didn't last long. At 0:29, junior forward Michael Jacobson of Janesville, above the top of the crease, took a feed from behind the net by senior forward Justin Hooper and fired in the game-winner. The victory was the fourth consecutive overtime win for the Bluebirds. Milwaukee University School outshot Janesville 38-23. For Janesville, Jacobson and Olszewski each had 1 goal. For Milwaukee University School - Meyer had 1 goal. Goalies: Janesville - Giese, Milwaukee University School - senior Jake Shully. Wisconsin Rapids (23-1-0, Section 3) defeated Eau Claire Memorial (18-5-1, Section 2) 2-1. Wisconsin Rapids led 1-0 after one period on a shorthanded goal from senior forward Ben Abbott. Eau Claire Memorial tied the game in the second period on a power play tally from sophomore forward Nolan Fadness at 10:38. The score stayed 1-1 through most of the third period until sophomore forward Anthony Knuth of the Red Raiders knocked in a rebound in the low slot at 11:21. Wisconsin Rapids held the Old Abes for the rest of the period. Eau Claire Memorial outshot Wisconsin Rapids 31-27. For Wisconsin Rapids, senior forward Jake Covi had 2 assists. For Eau Claire Memorial, Fadness had 1 goal. Goalies: Wisconsin Rapids - junior Tyler Ambroziak, Eau Clarie Memorial - senior Ben Ziemann. Superior (16-7-1, Section 1) defeated Antigo (14-9-1) 7-1. Superior dominated Antigo in the first period, outshot the Red Robins 18-2, and took a 3-0 lead. That advantage stretched to 6-0 with three more goals in the second period. Superior outshot Antigo 39-13. For Superior, senior forward Brett Olson had 3 goals, 2 assist and junior forward Mike Sislo had 2 goals, 2 assists. For Antigo, junior forward Nate Mantor had 1 goal. Goalies: Superior - senior Ben Buchs, Antigo - senior Jason Schroeder. Semifinals: 3/4/2005 Hartland Arrowhead (21-3-1) defeated Janesville Parker/Craig (14-10-2, Section 6) 2-1. The game was close and rather defensive with not alot of shots on goal. Janesville opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal on a 2-on-1 break from junior forward Michael Jacobson at 11:32 of the first period. In the second period, Arrowhead tied the game, 1-1, when senior forward Cory Clem scored on a 2-on-1 rush at 2:20. In the third period, the Bluebirds outshot Arrowhead 5-4 and had a good opportunity to take the lead on a power play at 8:34; however, Clem notched a shorthanded tally, at 10:03, to give the Warhawks a 2-1 lead. Arrowhead continued to hold Janesville off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game. Janesville outshot Arrowhead 18-14. For Arrowhead, Clem had 2 goals. For Janesville, Jacobson had 1 goal. Goalies: Arrowhead - sophomore Alex Koeppen, Janesville -junior Max Giese. Superior (17-7-1, Section 1) defeated Wisconsin Rapids (23-2-0, Section 3) 6-3. Superior led 1-0 after one period, then amassed a 4-0 bulge by 7:05 of the second period with three straight goals from senior forwards Adam Sauter, Brett Olson, and Ryan Smith. Wisconsin Rapids tallied once in the middle period to make the score 4-1 after two. The Red Raiders tried to come back in the final period and a flurry in the middle of the period brought Wisconsin Rapids a little closer. Junior forward Matt Gillette of the Red Raiders scored a shorthanded goal, at 8:00, to bring Wisconsin Rapids within 4-2; however, Olson of the Spartans netted a tally, on the power play, a little over a minute later, at 9:09, to give Superior their three-goal lead back. :14 later, at 9:23, senior forward Eric Borre scored for Wisconsin Rapids to keep the Red Raiders within two goals, 5-3; but, that was the extent of the scoring until the end of the period. Wisconsin Rapids pulled their goalie in the final minute, but Olson added an empty net marker at 14:50. Wisconsin Rapids outshot Superior 20-17. For Superior, Olson had 3 goals, Smith had 1 goal, 1 assist, and junior defenseman Steve Murray had 2 assists. For Wisconsin Rapids, Borre had 2 goals, 1 assist and Gillette had 1 goal, 1 assist. Goalies: Superior - senior Ben Buchs, Wisconsin Rapids - junior Tyler Ambroziak. Final: 3/5/2005 Superior (18-7-1, Section 1) defeated Hartland Arrowhead (21-4-1) 2-1 in overtime. The game was close all the way. Superior scored the only goal of the first period, just before the period ended, at 14:23, on a shot from the right circle by sophomore forward Brian Pierpont. Arrowhead tied the game in the second period when junior forward Augie Perrigo tallied at 12:20. The third period was scoreless as the team entered overtime tied, 1-1; however, overtime didn't last long. Senior forward Luke Mertz sent a low wrist shot from the top of the slot through a screen and into the net for the game-winner at 0:54. Superior outshot Arrowhead 23-15. For Superior, Pierpont and Mertz each had 1 goal. For Arrowhead, Perrigo had 1 goal. Goalies: Superior - senior Ben Buchs, Arrowhead - sophomore Alex Koeppen. |
