2002-2003 WISCONSIN STATE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT

Quarterfinals:  03/06/2003
Superior (21-3-0) defeated Middleton (12-11-1) 2-1.
Phil Karaba of Superior scored at 12:10 of the third period to break a 1-1 tie.  Superior outshout Middleton 24-14.  For Superior, Karaba and Kevin Harrington each had 1 goal.  For Middleton, junior forward AJ Ayres had 1 goal.  Goalies:  Superior - Ben Buchs, Middleton - senior Eric VanDenBergh.
Wausau West (18-3-3) defeated Madison Memorial (17-5-2) 7-4.
Wisconsin Rapids (23-0-1) defeated Milwaukee University School (14-9-1) 4-3.
New Richmond (22-2-0) defeated Verona (20-3-1) 2-1
in three overtimes.
Sophomore goalie Matt Page of New Richmond made 44 saves and held off Verona until junior forward Josh Calleja scored in the third overtime to give the Tigers the victory.  New Richmond outshot Verona 50-45.  For New Richmond, Calleja and Jon Siscik each had 1 goal.  For Verona, Jack Skille had 1 goal.  Goalies:  New Richmond - Page, Verona - sophomore Glenn Walker.


Semifinals: 
03/07/2003
Superior (22-3-0) defeated Wausau West (18-4-3) 3-1.
Superior dominated the first period, outshooting Wausau West 11-0.  The Spartans were only able to score on goal, however, from Dave Flynn at 8:23, for a 1-0 lead after one.  Despite Superior controlling the game, Wausau West tied the score 1-1 after two.  Superior retook the lead with a goal from Brett Olson at 4:30 of the third period.  Eric Halverson added an empty net goal at 14:35.  Superior outshot Wausau West 37-12.  For Superior, Brian Santori and Tony Janssen each had 2 assists.  For Wausau West, Trevor Schultz had 1 goal.  Goalies:  Superior - Ben Buchs, Wausau West - senior Tom Caillouette and Bryan Gaulke (the last few seconds).
New Richmond (23-2-0) defeated Wisconsin Rapids (23-1-1) 3-1.

Final: 
03/08/2003
Superior (23-3-0) defeated New Richmond (23-3-0) 3-2.
Superior led 1-0 after one and 2-0 midway through the second period; however, New Richmond came back with two goals in the second period for a 2-2 tie after two.  Only 0:17 into the third period, Phil Karaba of Superior scored to put the Spartans on top 3-2.  Superior held on the rest of the way for the victory.  Goalies:  Superior - Ben Buchs, New Richmond - sophomore Matt Page.
