| July 12-July 17, 2003 Massachusetts (5-0-1) defeated Minnesota (4-1-1) 1-0 in a very close gold medal game of the Select 17 Hockey Festival in St. Cloud, MN. Forward Patrick Kimball of Massachusetts netted a shorthanded goal at 16:58 of the first period for the only goal of the contest (two 23 minute periods). Minnesota outshot Massachusetts 32-30. Minnessota was #2 in scoring at the Festival with 22 goals. Massachusetts was #1 in defense allowing only 6 goals. Minnesota finished first in the American Division with a 4-0-1 mark. Massachusetts finished on top with a 4-0-1 record in pool play for the National Division. In pool play, Minnesota tied New England 5-5, defeated Pacific 4-1, Michigan 4-1, Mid-American 5-1 and New York 4-2 eng. New York was undefeated at 4-0 in pool play before losing to Minnesota. Four Minnesotans were selected for the 20-player roster of the Under-18 Select Team, defensemen Jack Hillen and Matt Niskanen along with forwards Justin Bostrom and Mike Taylor.
