| June 27-July 3, 2003 Team Central (5-0-1) defeated Team Minnesota (3-2-1) 6-5 in the gold medal game of the Select 16 Hockey Festival in Rochester, New York. Central led 4-3 after the first period, but Minnesota scored the first two goals of the second period to take a 5-4 lead. Central came back with the final two goals of the period to claim the championship. Minnesota finished with a 3-1-1 record in pool play. New England and Pacific also finished with 3-1-1 records in pool play for the American Division, but Minnesota won in the tiebreaker system to advance to the gold medal game. Central finished with a 4-0-1 record in pool play for the National Division. In pool play, Minnesota tied New England 4-4, defeated Pacific 4-1, lost to Michigan 2-3, and defeated Mid-American 5-3 and New York 3-2. Six Minnesotans were selected for the 20-player roster of the Under-17 Select Team, defensemen Jon Ammerman, Brian Lee and Taylor Chorney along with forwards Chad Rau, Ryan Stoa, and Ryan Thang.
