2004-2005 MASSACHUSETTS STATE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT

Division 1A  (Super 8 Class)

Preliminary Round.  Seeds #7-#10 are matched up to eliminate two teams with the two winners advancing to the Super 8 Tournament.
Three Rounds of Round Robin play for two brackets of four teams each.  The top two teams in each bracket move on to the semifinals.

St. John's Prep-Danvers (11-4-6, #10 seed) upset Duxbury (18-5-0, #7 seed) 5-4.
Austin Prep (13-5-3, #9 seed) defeated Medford (15-5-2, #8 seed) 4-3.

First Round:

Catholic Memorial (12-5-4, #1 seed) defeated Austin Prep (13-6-3, #9 seed) 3-2
in overtime.
Arlington Catholic (15-5-1, #5 seed) defeated Waltham (12-4-5, #4 seed) 4-3
in overtime.
Bracket 2
St. John's Prep-Danvers (12-4-6, #10 seed) upset Boston College High (15-6-2, #2 seed) 3-2.

Reading (18-5-0, #6 seed) shutout Hingham (15-6-2, #3 seed) 3-0.

Second Round: 03/10/2005 and 03/11/2005
Bracket 1
Arlington Catholic (16-5-1, #5 seed) upset Catholic Memorial (12-6-4, #1 seed) 4-1.
Catholic Memorial outshot Arlington Catholic in the first two period; however, the Cougars scored a goal in each period to lead 2-0 after two.  Arlington Catholic extended their advantage to 4-0 with two goals in the final period.  Catholic Memorial outshto Arlington Catholic 31-20.  For Arlington Catholic, senior forward Patrick Noonan had 2 goals and junior forward Ryan Butler had 1 goal, 1 assist. For Catholic Memorial, Mike DiOrio had 1 goal.  Goalies:  Arlington Catholic - senior David Pinkham, Catholic Memorial - junior Brendan Sullivan.
Austin Prep (14-6-3, #9 seed) upset Waltham (12-5-5, #4 seed) 6-3  eng.
Waltham led 3-1 early in the second period; however, Austin Prep came back on goals from senior forward Paul Scola and senior defenseman Steve Capraro, shorthanded, to tie the game 3-3 after two.  In the third period, junior defenseman Evan Patten of Austin Prep scored on a slap shot, at 2:14, to give the Cougars a 4-3 lead.  Austin Prep held that lead until freshman forward David McDonald tallied with 2:12 remaining.  Scola added an empty net goal.  Austin Prep outshot Waltham 34-27.  For Austin Prep, Scola had 2 goals, 1 assist.  Goalies:  Austin Prep - sophomore Ryan Casey, Waltham - junior Jeff Saran.
Bracket 2
Boston College High (16-6-2, #2 seed) defeated Reading (18-6-0, #6 seed) 4-2.
Boston College High scored twice in both the first and second periods to lead 4-0 after two.  Boston College High outshot Reading xx-16.
St. John's Prep-Danvers (13-4-6, #10 seed) upset Hingham (15-7-2, #3 seed) 4-3. 
Hingham scored twice in the first period to take a 2-0 lead, but St. John's Prep-Danvers responded with the next two goals to make it a 2-2 game after two.  The team traded goals midway through the third period to keep the game deadlocked at 3-3.  With 2:29 remaining, junior forward Austin Cowles of St. John's Prep-Danvers fired in a shot from the slot to put the Eagles on top, 4-3.  Hingham outshot St. John's Prep-Danvers 29-18.  Goalies:  St. John's Prep-Danvers - senior Dean Feole, Hingham - junior James Lemonias.

Third Round:
03/14/2005
Bracket 1
Catholic Memorial (13-6-4, #1 seed) defeated Waltham (12-6-5, #4 seed) 4-1.
Catholic Memorial led 3-1 after two.  Goalies:  Catholic Memorial - junior Brendan Sullivan.
Arlington Catholic (17-5-1, #5 seed) defeated Austin Prep (14-7-3, #9 seed) 4-3
in overtime.
The teams were tied 2-2 after two and traded goals early in the third period for a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation.  In the tiebreaking scheme of the round robin play, Austin Prep needed a victory to advance; so, the Cougars pulled their goalie in the final minute of the overtime.  Junior forward Patrick Fidler-O'Neil of Arlington Catholic netted an empty net goal with :14 remaining for the game-winner.
Goalies:  Austin Prep - senior David Pinkham.

Bracket 2
Boston College High (17-6-2, #2 seed) defeated Hingham (15-8-2, #3 seed) 4-1  eng.
Boston College High scored a goal in each of the first two periods to lead 2-0 after two.  In the third period, a tally from senior forward Chris Riley gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead.  Senior forward Pat McGuirk of Hingham tipped in a goal with 4:20 remaining and senior forward DJ Fimiani of Boston College High tacked on an empty net goal.  Boston College High was eliminated from the tournament by the tiebreaker of goals allowed among the teams in the tie.  Goalies:  Boston College High - Mark Donovan, Hingham - junior James Lemonias.
Reading (19-6-0, #6 seed) defeated St. John's Prep-Danvers (13-5-6, #10 seed) 3-1.
Reading scored the lone goal of the first period and dominated the second period, outshooting St. John's Prep-Danvers 11-4, while adding two tallies for a 3-0 lead after two.  Goalies:  Reading - Joe Barmante, St. John's Prep-Danvers - senior Dean Feole.

Semifinals:
03/17/2005
Catholic Memorial (14-6-4, #1 seed) defeated Reading (19-7-0, #6 seed) 3-1.
Arlington Catholic (18-5-1, #5 seed) defeated St. John's Prep-Danvers (13-6-6, #10 seed) 3-2.

Final:

Catholic Memorial (15-6-4, #1 seed) defeated Arlington Catholic (18-6-1, #5 seed) 3-1.

Belmont (15-6-2, #6 seed) defeated St. John's of Shrewsbury (13-7-5, #7 seed) 3-2 in overtime.
Final: 03/17/2005
Woburn (18-4-1, #1 seed) shutout Belmont (15-6-2, #6 seed) 3-0.

South:
Semifinals: 03/10/2005
Duxbury (20-4-0, #1 seed) defeated Needham (16-6-1, #4 seed) 5-2.
Xaverian (15-6-2, #6 seed) upset Milton (17-4-2, #2 seed) 2-1.
Final: 03/13/2005
Duxbury (21-4-0, #1 seed) shutout Xaverian (15-7-2, #6 seed) 7-0.  
Sophomore Brendan Carroll had a hat trick.  Senior goalie Kevin Gould notched the shutout.

State Final:
03/20/2005
Duxbury (22-4-0, South #1 seed) defeated Woburn (18-5-1, North #1 seed) 3-1.
