| Brief Background: The Rottweiler is a large, robust, powerful dog. His build gives him great strength, agility and endurance. The Rottweiler has a broad head, medium-sized almond shaped eyes, ears pendant, trianglular in size, and most commonly seen with a docked tail. They are said to be decended from the drover dogs of ancient Rome. The mastiff type dogs crossed the alps, herding cattle and guarding camps; one on the banks of the Neckar River, (now Southern Germany), the town of Rottweil (named for the red tile roofs on the villas built by the Romans). The Rottweiler Metzgerhund, (butcher dog) drove cattle to markets and returned with the filled purses of their masters around their necks. As rail transportation became useful, the dogs were used less frequently. The Rottweiler then gained popularity as a police dog and since, regained its popularity. |
