| Coat: There is a thick undercoat with a course outercoat, and brushing several times a week is encouraged. They can shed significantly in the summer, so they may need extra brushing and grooming to avoid getting a matted coat. |
| Temperament: Is active, affectionate, and friendly. Makes a loyal companion, and is playful upon invitation. Their desire to work is strong; as so is their energy. Rugged and adaptable, they are guardians, transportation, hunters, herders, and companions. |
| Brief Background: The Alaskan Malmute is a large, powerful heavy boned breed, descending from the ancient line of spitz type dogs with pricked ears, thick double coats, almond shaped eyes, and a tail that curls over their backs. Origninating from Alaska, they are one of the oldest arctic breeds, mushers used for hauling sleds and transportation, they are known as sled or sledge dogs. The Mahlemuts, an Alaskan Inuit tribe used the breed to pull sleds and as pack animals. The dogs were named after the tribe, and over time becoming Malamute. |

| Living Environment: Malamutes have a high activiity level, and need room to run, or lots of excersise. They prefer a cooler climate, and they can bore easily, so early training is recommended, although they may learn slower than other canines, they are highly trainable and eager to please. One of their most excitable challenges to learn is to pull, since it is their nature. |
