Onyx Tower
Shila nods, and throws the crystal toward the rift. Sean screams
as it comes near him, and dives for the ground. There is a flash
of light as the crystal collides with the rift, and then the screaming,
tortured noise of the rift increases. Darwin suddenly falls to the floor,
twitching and screaming in agony.
The rift slowly begins to fold in on itself, and you think you can almost
see black waves of energy converging on it, reentering the rift and
the world from which they came. The sound increases in pitch
and intensity as the rift grows smaller and smaller until it suddenly
vanishes, and the room is silent once more.
Darwin moans, pushing himself into a sitting position with a great
deal of effort. Blinking, he looks at you. 'It's gone....'
Before you can ask him what he means, you hear a similar moan
emenating from Sean's direction. Both you and Shila bolt toward him,
fearing something that could slide out of control in a matter of moments.
Sean manages to get himself into a sitting position, and looks at you
groggily. 'Who are you?' he asks thickly. He turns and sees his
brother. 'Darwin! Darwin, is what I'm remembering true?' he
shakes uncontrollably as Darwin stumbles his way over to him.
'I'm afraid it is, brother.' Darwin sits down heavily. 'Are you all right?'
Tears, nearly invisible, stream from Sean's eyes. 'No, I'm not. I
don't know if I ever will be. I nearly killed you... I nearly brought
the Onyx into this world. I don't know that there's any reason
I should continue on.'
Darwin stands up, offering Sean his hand. 'When I told you that
Beth yet lives, I was not lying to you. I have seen her with my own
eyes.'
Sean takes Darwin's hand, helping himself up. 'Could I see her too?'
he asks shakily.
Darwin nods. 'Certainly.' he turns to you and Shila. 'The two
of you have done more for me than I deserve. If ever you need
my assistance again, do not hesitate to ask. You have sealed
the rift between the Onyx's world and our own, and you have forced
it back where it belongs. You are both heroes. If you seek me, I
plan on living in Lein. Not immediately though. I need to travel
to Obern first with my brother. Farewell.' With that, Darwin
and Sean leave the room through a stairwell located in the corner.
Shila looks up at you. 'It's really over, isn't it?' she says quietly.
You nod. 'Shila, you saved us all...'
Shila blushes. 'It wasn't just me... if you hadn't told me to throw
the crystal, I would have forgotten that I had it. I was too terrified of
that rift to do anything...'
'Shila, don't put yourself down. You saved us.'
Shila smiles, but doesn't dispute the claim this time. 'Come on,'
she says to you. 'Let's go home.'
