Onyx Tower
Onyx Tower
Your vision returns to you quickly. You find yourself in the
clammy confines of the Onyx tower. The room you are in does
not appear to be special in any way, except for an altar at one end.
There is a man who, though you have never seen him before,
you immediately identify as Sean Tanner standing in front of the
altar. His arms are crossed and he regards you solemnly.
'Well, I had actually expected you to come here earlier.' he says,
glaring at Darwin, Shila, and then you. 'I've been aware of everything
that you have done, you know. Darwin, you shouldn't have tried
to save Obern. It must go, like all the other outposts of Eleein!
Otherwise, the Onyx will be thwarted, as before.'
Darwin steps forward. 'As well it should be! The Onyx is using you,
brother. You see what it wants you to see. Don't you understand?
I know that somewhere within you, buried deep under the delusions
that the invader has given you, is Sean Tanner.'
'It is you who the Onyx is using! You do not realize it, do you? You
have brought to me not only yourself, but one of the greatest
marshals of the West, and the Hero of the Eleein order!' Sean
revels in his discovery.
'I act under my own free will.' Darwin protests calmly. 'But the Onyx
does not allow you to. Tell me, Sean, what happened to your wife
after you opened the doors to this tower? What happened to
Beth?'
The expression drains from Sean's face. 'Beth is dead- you know
that. She died, the Eleein clerics killed her.' He looks toward the
floor, not at all confident in this answer. He knows Darwin had
a reason to bring this up.
'Sean, Beth lives. I saw her when I was in Obern. She rests now,
and the Onyx lives within her no more. Your wife is alive.'
Sean doesn't move. 'Beth... is alive?'
Darwin nods. 'Come with me. We will both see her. Perhaps the
presense of both of us can convince her to come back to us.'
An incredulous smile spreads over his face. 'Yes... let's see her...'
He takes a step forward, and then stops in his tracks, yelling and
clutching his head. 'No! He is lying to you! Beth is dead!' Sean
screams.
An ear-splitting noise shakes the room, drowning out even Sean's
pleas. The alter seems to fold in on itself, leaving a dark, gaping hole
where it used to be. A rift... Sean had succeeded where the original
priest of the Onyx had failed. Sean had opened a rift to the plane
where the Onyx was.
Sean looks up toward Darwin. 'You're too late!' He says it
sadly, choking. 'It's coming.' with that, sean turns around and
runs toward the rift.
'Shila!' Darwin yells, barely able to keep his voice above the
noise of the room. 'The Crystal!'
Shila looks at you, yelling 'What?'
'Use the crystal...' you begin.
'...On Sean!'
'...On the rift!'
