Blighted Plains
Blighted Plains
Drawing your sword, you run forward to confront the shambling
soldiers of the Onyx. The first falls to your sword the instant you
are in range. A second dies within seconds of the first. It is then
that the rest begin to act, turning quickly on you. Brainless zombies,
you can handle - intelligent beings much, much stronger than you
are something quite different. You launch out at the nearest one in
an attempt to buy more time, but the fanatic just brushes away
your attack and closes further. You drop back into a defensive position,
moving backward and trying to parry the numerous attacks directed
at you.
'Poor knight,' the lead one taunts. 'It is such a shame that it ends
this way, is it not?'
You are about to answer when a brilliant light erupts directly in front
of you, and you are knocked unconscious.
You awake to the sight of Shila standing over you, looking worried.
'Shh!' She says as she sees your eyes open. 'Don't try to move.'
Darwin appears in your field of view. 'Sir, that was one of the most
reckless things that I have ever witnessed... and one of the most
brilliant. It had not occurred to me that the Onyx would not
be able to respond immediately. I just apologize for the results of
my magic.'
You must have looked confused, because Darwin continues. 'I was
responsible for eradicating the other four followers. I used a spell which
wiped them from this earth, but due to your close proximity, you were
also affected.' He smiles toward Shila. 'Your partner is responsible
for your continued health, I am proud to say.'
Shila smiles. 'Thank you...' she murmurs, and then looks down toward
you. 'Okay, try to sit up...'
Slowly, you manage to sit up, despite the ache in every muscle in
your body. A little diziness overcomes you, and then passes as
quickly as it came. With the help of Darwin and Shila, you manage
to climb to your feet. The battlefield shows no sign of the recent
conflict. Not even the attackers remain, so thourough was Darwin's
spell.
'Shila, am I okay?' You ask her, your throat feeling slightly sore.
Shila nods. 'You can move, and you should be fully healed within
the hour. But I don't think we should go until then.'
You shake your head in disagreement. 'Shila, we can't stay here and
risk being attacked. We have to go to the tower and finish this.'
'I agree-' Darwin interrupts. 'If I can accomplish this quickly,
then nobody else need suffer. We must move on.'
Shila looks down, frustrated. 'Okay then. Let's go. Just don't
blame me if you pass out along the way.'
With that, the three of you continue on your way.
After an entire day of marching...
