Blighted Plains
Blighted Plains
You wake suddenly, drawing your sword before you even realize
what is happening. Looking around, you spot Darwin standing
at the edge of the camp, looking out on the plains beyond. You shake
you head - you've fallen asleep on watch. You never fall asleep on
watch... you decide to blame it on the stress of the day. Walking
over to Darwin, you follow his gaze.
'What are you looking for?' you ask him, trying not to sound
distrutstful. He seems to be on on honest enough undertaking after
all, even if he might be possessed. You resolve to try to be a bit
more trusting... but to also keep your eyes open.
'I'm not looking for anything.' Darwin responds, glancing toward
you. 'I'm watching our visitors.'
Your attention snaps back to the plains where Darwin is gazing, but
your trained eyes can detect nothing out of the ordinary. You are about
to tell Darwin that he is hallucinating when he speaks up.
'Don't try looking for them, Sir Nichols. I assure you, you will not
be able to see them unless they wish you to. And by then, it will
be too late. I will dispatch them if they come too close.' He turns
to you slightly. 'My brother knows what I plan already... and he will
attempt to stop us using his minions. They are much too weak to
be able to face me directly, so they shall try to divide my attention by
attacking both you and Shila. If we come under attack, fight as
though your very soul depends on it.' Turning back, he nearly
whispers the next phrase. 'Because it does.'
Not sure what to make of this, you go back to the campsite and wake
Shila for her turn at watch. She looks just as cross with you as she
did back in Lein, but she doesn't say a word as she moves to Darwin's
side. Too tired to do any arguing, you lay down and sleep.
That Morning...
