Road to Obern
'Then we'll go to the temple.' you say, looking toward Shila. You
are rewarded with a slight smile for your efforts. Darwin visibly relaxes.
Turning toward Ryan, he says 'Stay here, and be sure to turn back all who
would approach the city.' He glances toward Shila before adding,
'And do not kill anyone unless they are in immediate danger of being
taken by the Onyx.'
Ryan nods. 'It's getting late, are you going to be staying the night here?'
'No-' Darwin replies. 'If it's okay with my guides, I would prefer
to be on my way as soon as possible.'
You nod. You're just as eager to get out of here as Darwin is. Moments
later, the three of you are on your way. Shila leads, Darwin following
her and you bring up the rear - both to guard against attacks
and to keep an eye on Darwin. The three of you walk southward
for a while as the darkness around you congeals. After a time, Shila
speaks up.
'It's getting late, I think we should set up camp.' She suggests. Before
you can agree, Darwin speaks up.
'An excellent idea.' he says. 'I can keep watch, if you wish.'
'No need.' you say, not at all willing to let this man watch over you
while you're asleep. He shrugs and sits down. You begin to unpack
your things and set up camp, after some deliberation lighting a fire.
Darwin is noncommunitive while Shila and you eat a sparse dinner.
She prepares for bed, while you stand on the outskirts of the camp,
keeping watch. Darwin does not go to sleep - instead, he just
sits where he is, staring over the plains to the distant horizon. It doesn't
make you feel any less uneasy to see him there, but if you're going
to pay attention to possible enemies outside the camp, you're going
to have to ignore what might be a possible enemy within the camp....
A few hours later,
You awaken Shila for her watch and go to bed.
