The High Barrier
The High Barrier
The cavern, which seems to twist on and on, is at least illuminated
by your torch, you think to yourself. Without light you would have been
lost long ago. Shila seems to have some internal sense of direction...
at least you hope she does, as she's been leading you through this
stone labyrinth for at least an hour. Of course, if she doesn't, then
you are completely and hopelessly lost, but at least you
haven't perished at the hands (or claws, or tentacles) of whatever
thing that was back there. The thought is small consolation when
compared to the possibility of starving to death. Better to go out
with a fight!
'Spencer, look!' Shila calls from ahead of you. You notice that she is
nearly out of your sight - you must have slowed your pace when you
were thinking. Not a good thing, you don't want to lose track of each
other as it is almost certain that you would never find each other
again. You run to catch up to her.
'What is it?' You say, looking around. You don't see anything but
the familiar stone walls.
Shila points at your torch. 'Spencer, your torch is flickering.'
Instantly, you realize the significance of this - for your entire march, the
torch has burned more or less steadily - as have all the other torches
that you've gone through on this journey. For the torch to be flickering
now means only one thing - there must be an exit to the outside somewhere
nearby that is providing a breeze. You look over to Shila, who nods
as though confirming your thoughts. Without a word, the two of you
continue on.
A short while later...
