Extensions, alterations and renovation of existing homes requires careful consideration. Usually budgets for domestic work is limited and altering existing structures can be a complicated task requiring a sensitive approach. DSA are able to advise on economic solutions and local contractors to carry out the works.

Tewin, Hertfordshire
The design for this extension was inspired by a Mondrian painting where planes are uninterrupted and openings between solid planes frame views. Service elements including heating and lighting are concealed. The selection of materials and technical specification ensures the design is energy efficient and low maintenance. Frameless, low E double glazing was specified so that the structure does not overheat in summer and loose heat in winter. Underfloor heating allows the room to be kept at a lower temperature, ideal for plants and humans!

Flat Roof House, Buckinghamshire
The 1934 Flat Roof House was completely refurbished by DSA in 2001. The 4 thin wall concrete construction of this unusual house proved to be a challenge technically. Designs for the refurbishment ensured an energy efficient and low maintenance solution with underfloor heating on the ground floor, new double glazing and highly insulated wall and roof linings. An energy efficient condensing boiler was installed (a rebate of 250 obtained from the Energy Efficient Trust). Condensing boilers can reduce heating bills by a third. Combined with other energy efficient measures the heating and running of the newly refurbished house will be a fraction of convention housing. An illuminated handrail adds a light touch to the cantilevered staircase and low energy lighting is concealed in window soffits. The house has been published in a number of magazines and entered for several awards.

Sharp Angles - A New Image for a 1930's Concrete House

The Flat Roof House near Henley on Thames was originally designed by Colin Lucas, partner of the Modernist practice Connell Ward and Lucas. During its recent renovation by Dennis Sharp Architects lessons concerning the extension and restoration of a modern concrete building were learnt. Dennis Sharp explains the way it has been upgraded to meet the needs of the 21st century.
