DSA have an expertise in designing for people with mental and/or physical difficulties. DSA obtained an RIBA Research Award to examine the effects of the built environment on access and behaviour. The findings were remarkable in that it uncovered a direct and immediate relationship between the two. Aggression could be minimised and access maximised  through appropriate design. Using the findings of this study DSA develop unique solutions to enhance peoples lives and never retort to off the shelf grab rail ramp formulas.

Access, Bathing Facilities and Living
This new garden room extension is full of sun, light and air with magnificent views of the countryside through frameless glazing. Ramps and grabrails are an integral part of the design and are discretely placed so that they do not disfigure or dominate the design.  The emphasis of the design is the joys of life not on the problems of access. This is a room for living and inspiration, relaxing and savouring- not just a wheelchair turning circle to connect the living room to the garden terrace.

Research, Conference and Publication
DSA were commissioned by MacIntyre Homes to organise a conference at the Royal institute of British Architects on the subject of Designing for Mental Disability.  Opened by Prof Anthony Clare this conference was the first of its kind to be held at the RIBA bringing together design professionals with mental health carers and clients. Conference speakers examined in detail how the use of space, colour, planning, daylighting, temperature and social activities can make a difference to peoples well being.
