| This is Mr. Schubert's class; the pictures were taken during autumn 1966. Dennis' brother, Robert, was in the other class. That picture is available if you'd like to see it. See how many of our classmates you can recognize! Well, now, let's see..... While we're not 100% sure of the names or the spellings, there's Kay Nehmer, Michael Darling, Tommy Saunders, Michele Kindt, Barbara Wagner, Janice Mann, Nicky Moraitis, Eleonore Reitsenstein, Edward Hummel, Karen Johnson, Carl Seeger, Linda Seleska, Tom Wagner, Dennis O'Boyle, Norbert Weischollak, Debbie Cox, Patrick Klemmer, Roy Williams, Larry Bielfus, Nick Lolli, hey, where's Linda Zeke, she's there, isn't she!?! The other class featured such characters as Jeffery Fritz, and of course Robert O'Boyle, Arlan Fokker, Martin Zabel and all the rest, you know the names. Mr. Schubert was famous for saying, "You lazy loafers!", mainly in jest. He was fond of reminiscing about his days in the Army and often would make us "march", teaching us the basic positions of standing at attention, how to do a left face, right face and about face. Enough of that! DO YOU REMEMBER the principal, Mr. Melvin J. Lipke, and his annual "No Snowball Throwing Policy"! How about the Safety Cadets yelling, "Stay off the snow mounds!" Most of us were at 38th Street since Kindergarten. The O'Boyle family had moved from the Ft. Benning, Georgia area back to Milwaukee in June, 1964, so Dennis and Robert started at 38th Street School in the Fourth Grade. Dennis was in Mr. Hartman's class. Then it was on to Mrs. Frazier's class for Fifth Grade..... What do you remember? How about our class trip to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, some of us were able to talk to kids in DisneyLand, California, via a camera-phone. Remember "Slam Books"!?! Banned by Mr. Lipke, of course. Today something like that would get you in jail for committing a hate crime! There was great social change ocurring Back In The Day while we attended 38th together. We moved from the Fifties and the Eisenhower administration to Kennedy, then on to Lyndon Baines Johnson and his "Great Society". Throw in the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo Space Programs, along with the "police action" in Vietnam, the Six Day War in Israel, wow, that just about wraps it up. Many of us would shop on North Ave., from JC Penny's down near 33rd St. all the way to the Uptown district. Did you ever see a Braves game at the Stadium, or maybe a Packers game--Bart Starr and all the rest!?! How often did you go swimming at Washington Park, or ice skating at Sherman Park!?! Boys, boys, boys, PLEASE don't steal the girls' knit stocking caps and throw them in the snow! Come on in the park building and warm up a bit, have some hot chocolate. Maybe you'll head over to fabulours Capitol Court Shopping Center to visit the Kookie Cookie House! Have a sandwich or THREE for a dollar at Li'L Angus while you're there! Or, go downtown and ride the train in the Toy Department at the Boston Store....... "Can it be that it was all so simple then, or has time re-written every line?" --Barbara Streisand Well, come on, now, this must have sparked a memory or two. Send your memories to him at: [email protected] Who could forget the smell of J. Pipp's Bakery, donuts and more wafting through the air while the dew was still moist on the ground, mmmmmmmmmm...... |
